Good Morning, Family Dinner-ists!

A few notes before dive-in:

PASSOVER, EASTER, and APRIL 4th  Excited to celebrate Passover, Easter, or simply the First Sunday in April with some delicious eats? We have you covered. We will have brisket, hams, legs of lamb, spiced brioche rolls, macaroons, and much more.  Now that the CDC says it's safe to hug Grandparents, invite your Bubbe or your Nonna over and whip up some family favorites. We will go live with the ordering next Tuesday.

WHAT WE'RE READING  Several of your shared this insightful Op-Ed in the New York Times by Mark Bittman about the plight of Black Farmers in America. It highlights the alarming race gap in agriculture (98% of agricultural land is owned by White people) and the systemic financial disadvantages endured by Black farmers. It also celebrates new bills in Congress that, as part of the COVID relief package, alleviate burdensome debt for American farmers and includes direct payments and loan forgiveness for farmers of Color. A brief but important read.

BAGS, BAGS, BAGS!  We are FINALLY ready to take your black Family Dinner bags back after putting a pause on this during the pandemic.  Please leave them out for your drivers and they will haul them back to us. We will be getting them all professionally cleaned and ready to get back into the rotation.

If you have any questions or feedback, we would love to hear from you. You can always reach us at hello@sharefamilydinner.com.

Have a great weekend!

Erin + Tim

WORDS TO LIVE BY.

I'm not exactly an inspirational quote kind of a gal, the adjectives "warm and fuzzy" don't often get lobbed my way.  But, at the risk of dipping a toe into the crowded landscape of "Live, Laugh, Love", I wanted to share this quote from Elena Ferrante:

"Nowhere is it written that you can't do it."

I love this quote. It's gritty and direct. I re-discovered it recently in a newsletter from Curio Spice Co and immediately appropriated it. The quote is pulled from Ferrante's novel "My Brilliant Friend" from her "Neapolitan Novels" trilogy. It is an absolutely stunning tale of two friends who are fiery, stubborn, immensely talented, and above all ferociously devoted to each other set in 1950's Naples. They are among my favorite books and, taken collectively, make a magnum opus of literary feminism.

And before you think you've unwittingly tumbled into the weekly newsletter from your neighborhood book/white wine club, allow me to tease some relevance out of this.

International Women's Day was last Monday, March 8th (Oh, my goodness! A whole day, just for us? That sounds exhausting!) and the Internet stopped talking about Meghan and Harry just long enough to make a montage of women in power doing impressive things set to "Run the World (Girls)" by Beyonce.

The other 364 days a year, we can draw inspiration from the women around us, playing on loop.  From the small business owners starting at the bottom and looking doggedly upwards, to the Moms on day 214,654 of doing the exact same impossibly difficult work, to the female teachers, doctors, and essential workers who are meeting and surpassing the challenges of the day.  I am in awe of the number of times these women had to hear, and subsequently ignore, the word "can't", maybe even coming out of our own mouths.

When I came upon this quote in Ferrante's book, I circled and underlined, decorated the margins with exclamation points and a HELL YES in all caps. Re-reading it in Curio's Newsletter, I realized I needed to hear it again. And maybe you did, too.

Happy Women's Day/Month/Year.  Go get after it, whatever it is.

RECIPES

(from Shannon)

Chicken and Mushrooms - Simple recipe! Also, does anyone actually get a second for their food to look like the picture before it's devoured?

Tomato and Red Onion Salad - It is currently 70 degrees in Woburn and I'm feeling inspired for a more summer-y type recipe! (9 days till spring!!)

Poorman's Lobster Newburg - Hint: there's no actual shellfish involved, but a lot of cream!

Puff Pastry Fish - I spend quite a bit of time searching through recipe sites to find the best, seasonal recipes you can use with the items in your share that week. This recipe made me spit out my water when I saw the picture. Just for funzies, if you make a riff on this pastry and send us an email at recipes@sharefamilydinner.com, you will be heavily rewarded with praise and a prize!

Popcorn from the Cob - Let out your inner child or if you have a child, fun science experiment time to see what happens when you heat little kernels! I would suggest following up this experiment with a movie, too!

New resource! Want to share recipes that wow'ed you with us or show off something incredible that is just going to make me hungry while checking emails? Drop us a line over at recipes@sharefamilydinner.com.  We'll be highlighting your recipes and creations in coming weeks!

Shannon's Food and Farming Friday Fun Fact: Each silk on a corn plant connects directly to a potential kernel and needs to be pollinated for that connected kernel to develop!
