BUOYS, BAGS, and BUFFALO!

BUOYS, BAGS, and BUFFALO!

This week instead of spelunking through the smoldering rubble of my tired brain in search of something interesting or witty to share, we're just going to hit you with a few updates about the wonderful things on the horizon at Family Dinner.

Hold on tight, folks, we are going to quickly careen through non-sequiturs such as returning re-usable Family Dinner bags (at last!), the New Meats on the Street, the Musical Event of Year, and how to avoid getting into an all-out brawl with your family over the last Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookie.

The Musical Event of 2021 is brought to you by the Buoys of Summer, a Boston-based Yacht Rock band whose members include several of the Family Dinner All-Star Delivery Team: Peter Danilchuk, Davina Yannetty, and Ben Blanchard (left, center, and right in the photo).  The Buoys of Summer are streaming live from Cotuit Center for the Arts, Saturday, March 6, 7:30pm. Tickets are just $25 per screen--bring the whole fam! The Buoys of Summer pay tribute to the smooth-sailing, silk-stocking SoCal sounds of the 70s and early 80s. Check out a clip of them here, from their last show at the Sinclair. (The whole Fam Din crew was in attendance, including Peter Wong who you can see majestically swaying to the tunes around second :38. Luckily, they muted my constant yelling at the top of my lungs for them to play Toto's Africa.)

We all miss live music, cozy up to the next best thing and join us this Saturday. YEAH, BUOOOOY!

BAGS, BAGS, BAGS!  We are FINALLY ready to take your black Family Dinner bags back after putting a pause on this during the pandemic.  Please leave them out for your drivers and they will haul them back to us. We will be getting them all professionally cleaned and ready to get back into the rotation. (Adios, paper bags!) We aim to use as little packaging as possible, and to pack in re-usable or compostable materials whenever we can. It's a bit more effort, and it costs a bit more, but it makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside, like there's a reusable, insulated bag around our hearts.  We are hoping to have the black bags in service in the coming weeks.

Buffalo - the New Meat on the Street - This week in the double shares we have buffalo burger patties from Yankee Farmer's Market in New Hampshire. The meat is incredibly lean and tasty. We also upped the game of our add-on meat section by including Bison AND Venison from Yankee Farmer's Market. Dinner just got a lot more exciting, because Venison Stew is just about the most delicious thing ever.

Cookie Battle Royale - Don't go all Lucha Libre with your family over the last Thin Mint in the cupboard. There is still time to buy cookies through Family Dinner from Girl Scout Troop #75141. These amazing Girl Scouts are part of a National Program called Sow What? - studying food systems and the environmental and health impact of food. We updated the page with insights from the Girl Scouts about the curriculum--they are amazing! Here's a sample of what they had to say:

"Something that stood out to me during the "Sow What?" journey was the scale at which things are happening.  We didn't just reiterate that climate change will be irreversible by 2030, but actually learned how 30% of all food goes to waste, contributing an alarming 11% to greenhouse gas emissions with something entirely preventable.  This journey has also prompted me to research other pertinent issues, including other ways our food contributes to pollution.  After looking into the detriments of plastic packaging and food transportation, I'm committed to making better decisions as a consumer." - Grace, 17, Winchester

Someone get this kid a job at Family Dinner!

That's all we have for now! Have a wonderful week, friends!

Erin + Tim

RECIPES

(from Shannon)

Bison Burger: What did the buffalo say to his son when he went to college? Bison! I am so beyond excited to test out bison burgers. Did you know the Great Bison Belt was a tract of grassland from Alaska to the Gulf of Mexico, East to Western New York, and West to Parts of Northern California where bison roamed creating some of the richest topsoil in the world over thousands of years?!

Black Bean How-To: Don't be intimated at the thought of dried beans! Follow this how-to to make your own creamy black beans! Add spices and rice for a delicious rice and beans or add into a sweet potato veggie burger! Possibilities are endless!

Haddock with Arugula Pesto: A great way to use these incredible greens on top of a pan-seared fish!

**Valley Veggies: As we are speeding towards spring (Monday was the meteorological start of spring, and the Equinox is on the 20th--just 15 days away!), we are trying to get creative with the offerings we're providing to you before the new crops pop up in the next few weeks! Valley Veggies is a program owned and operated by the Western Massachusetts Food Processing Center where they provide season-extending opportunities for local farmers by freezing produce at their peak ripeness! One of my mom's favorite stories is when I ate all of the Thanksgiving broccoli one year, I stand by it. Broccoli is amazing and I'm so excited to get this local yumminess to you this week!
