Flowers, Farmers and Fiesta

This week marks the start of the Brookford Farm Sunflower Soirée. This flower filled fête Goes from August 12th to August 20th at Brookford Farm in Canterbury, NH.

On the weekends you can expect music, hayrides, pick your own flowers, food and cow parades. Did you hear me? I said COW PARADES. Take a moment out of your your wild morning filled with emails, laundry and eating crumbs off your keyboard and picture that. A cow parade. It just makes the udders all warm and fuzzy.

(I'll move on.)

Tickets are $10 and every dollar goes to the farm, its workers and its mission. We spoke to Luke Mahoney, pictured among said sunflowers about the importance of events such as these during such a complicated growing season:

"This season has been hard on most farms here in New England due to the extremely wet conditions. It has effected the yield and quality of many crops ultimately effecting sales and profits. Most farmers I know of do not have any effective crop insurance to buffer their losses. Events like the Sunflower Soiree have a deep and significant importance. In addition to providing some income to make up for a poor season, the event brings the farm crew and the community together in a way that celebrates the beauty of the season on the farm. This provides a huge morale boost to farmers in a moment of need. Many summer farm events also include artists, crafts people and musicians. What would the world look like without all these under appreciated professionals? I don’t want to imagine. "

We have been working with Brookford Farm since these beginning. These guys are our partners and our friends. We know them well enough to know Luke looooves wearing beat up green Umbros (pictured) for which we mock him relentlessly. They sometimes let the boys name the cows and ended up with a lady named Gatorade. They are incredibly passionate, hard working good people who are doing things right and growing incredible food.

Honey Garlic Pork Tenderloin: I'm going extra and adding mustard to this mix.

Fried Redfish: Frying Red Fish is my favorite preparation here. This recipe calls to make a spicy remoulade as the side which is French for JUST MIX MAYO AND SRIRACHA!

Romaine and Celery Salad: Simple, crunchy. I may do green goddess in lieu of ranch but I know Joe will ranch it the heck on up. He's from the Midwest.

Recipes (ME + NH)

Corn Chowder With Bacon - This dish screams "SUMMER" from your chowder bowl.

Greek Tempeh Skewer Bowls - Tons of flavor and easily scalable for a crowd.

Roasted Tomatillo Enchiladas - My stomach is growling. An otherwise rich dish, the tomatillos brighten this right up. For a bit more details on prepping these delightful, bright green orbs of deliciousness, check this fried tomatillos recipe out (which, btw, also sounds pretty damn amazing).

Chicken Bacon Ranch Poppers - IMO, ground chicken needs some additional fat to keep it from becoming a rubbery drag. Enter: bacon. Reading this recipe, I'm channeling my inner Ina Garten and thinking, "How bad can that be?"
