We're in It Together

I’ve been a New Englander long enough now to have an itch that needs to be scratched. One that I think is generally pretty dang useless to scratch but here we are: What’s up with this weather?! Not only has it greatly reduced our beach days, bike rides and hikes, it has also thrown summer eating off quite a bit. Tomatoes have been late and less abundant, lettuce has been reluctant to grow, plans to grill that beautiful hunk of seafood have been thwarted... and where’re our local peaches, plums and other stone fruit?

When it comes to food, the adage, one that I whole-heartedly believe in, “there's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing”, ain’t helpful. So, what’re we to do? We enjoy what we’ve got, when we’re able to get it. Our Fruit Share folks have been on the frontlines, mostly digging into berries and melons. And we're already seeing the season's first pears and apples at the market.

And those local peaches? Well, thanks to that insane cold snap we had back in April, they’re a lost cause. So, at least for our MA customers, we’re breaking our local! local! local! rules a lil’ bit and have sourced some from Klein's Kill Fruit Farm in the Hudson Valley alongside some local blackberries from Ward's Berry Farm. The Fruit Share folks in ME and NH will have to suffer through some delicious Dark Belle watermelons and wild ME blueberries (may I suggest sprinkling some Tajín on that slice of watermelon?).

With what looks like a spell of drier days on the horizon, I’ll be looking to get outside as much as possible, throw as much stuff on the grill as possible and relish the waning days of summer.

Classic Smashed Burgers - It both delights and pains me to say it but these cooler nights mean cooking indoors is a bit more plausible. But I'm still craving burgers so, when the time comes, this is how I'munna roll.

Honey-Soy Glazed Salmon - Comes together super quickly so you're not blasting additional heat around the kitchen. And pretty easily translatable to the grill. Or...

...Grilled Teriyaki Salmon - Knock this out instead.

Grilled Chicken Tacos - Hardest part of this is gonna be de-boning your leg/thigh quarters thusly. It ain't hard and it's a good skill to have so dive in!

Chicken Katsu - And now that you've acquired a new skill and are drooling over that brief lil' snippet of chicken katsu on that YouTube video linked above, dive into this deliciousness. As noted: "Boneless, skinless chicken thighs can be treated very much like pork cutlets: just pound them inside a zipper-lock bag."

Summer Squash and Zucchini Tacos - If you're not needing to keep them vegan, crumbling some of the delicious Queso de Verano from Silvery Moon Creamery that most of you are getting this week would be an A+ move.

Tempura Squash Blossoms - We're going a bit out on a limb with these squash blossoms some of you are getting. With all this rain, I'm not certain they'll actually be available when I go to pick up at the market tomorrow but fingers crossed! If Dandelion Spring has them, I'm either doing this tempura fried jam...

Squash Blossoms Stuffed With Ricotta - ...these stuffed lil' fellas...
