Member Spotlight

This wonderful soul is Julie Baer, long time member and supporter of Family Dinner. She's a writer, an artist, and inventive cook. Julie is always thoughtful and thought provoking, sharing interesting articles and events about food, local ecosystems and food justice. She's a gem of this community and we asked her to share a bit with all of you.

What's the best part about Family Dinner?

As a teenager, I found myself unable to eat animals, likely due to a severely tender heart and for most of my life since then I’ve been a vegetarian. But back then we didn’t yet know what a healthful vegetarian diet was, so we just avoided meat while still eating iceberg lettuce and french fries! We would have to drive to the next town to find a “health food store” where we mainly bought “health food junk food.” Diet for a Small Planet served as a critical societal turning point, informing my generation about amino acids, complementary plants, and complete proteins. Many years later, local and vegetarian food and information is now abundant–but inequitably distributed across society, creating health and opportunity disparities. While it is ultimately the responsibility of governments and industries to address access and resource issues, on a personal level I try to be as responsible as I can to eat locally and leave a light footprint. But this would take a lot of time and effort without Family Dinner, which essentially does this work for me! They make my life easier while helping me and our environment be healthy and happy.

Do you have any favorite items and any recipe ideas for those items?

We love Sophia’s plain Greek yogurt. It’s so thick, we use it instead of cream cheese. And we are so happy about local farm fresh eggs, as we rely on eggs for protein and iron. I make a creamy pie by blending the yogurt and eggs with some vanilla and grated lemon zest. I use agave or coconut sugar for sweetener. Pour it into a graham cracker crust and bake at 350 degrees for about 25 min. I also make this pie a different way, using firm tofu instead of yogurt. For both of these pies, there are endless variations, for instance adding shredded coconut, fruit, or chocolate chips (without lemon zest).

Extra bit of fun news!

I currently have several tidal pool paintings in a group exhibition at my artist collective Atlantic Works Gallery in East Boston, MA. And I will be having a solo show of my tree work at The Art House in Somerville Aug 3-Sept 9. There is an opening reception on August 10, 5:30-7:30 pm, so please do come!

Recipes (MA)

We have yellow fin tuna for everyone this week! We know we have offered tuna a few times in the past months but the season is short and we want to carpe tuna while we can.

Summer Corn Salad: This calls for cheese which I think makes the world go round, skip it if you disagree or don't have any.

Corn Fritters: These guys are a delicious side but hearty enough to make a meal out of 'em.

Collard Greens: This is a lighter version of some collard recipes. The trick is slicing them thinly to allow an even cook.

Recipes (ME + NH)

Classic Smashed Burgers - It both delights and pains me to say it but these cooler nights mean cooking indoors is a bit more plausible. But I'm still craving burgers so, when the time comes, this is how I'munna roll.

Sichuan Dry Fried String Beans - Super flavor and comes together quickly. If you don't have these ingredients in your pantry, I suggest you pull the trigger and scout out more ways to use them. The Woks of Life site and YouTube channel are A+ resources.

Cantonese Beef Rice Bowls - Perfect example, right here.

Blistered Shishito Pepper - So dang simple and so dang tasty. Blister 'em hard and be rewarded. We do these after an afternoon snack along with other seasonal dishes like:

Cherry Tomato Bruschetta - Yeah... we totally ignore whether or not these things go "together". Key here is keeping it simple and getting the best ingredients.
