Light and dark

A much-anticipated solar eclipse will make its graceful arc across the United States on Monday. With it will, no doubt, come feelings of awe and of connection. Some may even wax poetic about the duality of light and dark, and our relationship with both.

As with the solar system, so too are the little specks on Earth flickering between light and dark.

The killing of seven World Central Kitchen workers in Gaza this week has received an extraordinary amount of international attention; as it should. As should the indiscriminate killing of any human. In the contrails of this horror, however, exists something beautiful in learning more about WCK and the work of these incredible people.

WCK started in 2010 by Chef José Andrés with the belief that food is a human right. They go into disaster areas, war zones and points of climate crisis. They set up community kitchens with local chefs and employ local people to serve familiar, comforting food to people in crisis.

In their 14 years they have delivered over 350 million meals to soothe and comfort people in their darkest and most isolated moments.

Now they are preparing millions of hot meals to Israelis and Palestinians; the victims of this horrible war. They're incredibly savy and quick thinking. During the war in Gaza they were struggling to get shipments of food in by road so they built a jetty out of rubble to reroute aid through the sea. Incredible.

Of his team Chef Andrés wrote:

"The seven people killed on a World Central Kitchen mission in Gaza on Monday were the best of humanity. They are not faceless or nameless. They are not generic aid workers or collateral damage in war.

Saifeddin Issam Ayad Abutaha, John Chapman, Jacob Flickinger, Zomi Frankcom, James Henderson, James Kirby and Damian Sobol risked everything for the most fundamentally human activity: to share our food with others."

The best of humanity.

Their work and their passion is so stunningly beautiful, so fundamentally altruistic. I wish I could claim to be the same, to have any grain of that in me - but I drive carrots around for a living.

The people who run toward not away from peril and harm are a rarified breed who deserve our complete reverence. I want to hold the beauty of these seven people and the depth of their grace in my heart. Let that live in there alongside the feelings of rage and despair; the maelstrom of pessimism. Little bursts of light and dark interwoven in one heavy heart.
