Helping Hands

We're all giddy over here at Family Dinner because we have been invited to join the Board of Community Cooks, an incredible non profit helping to fight food insecurity in our neighborhoods.

Through them over 650 volunteers prepared monthly meals that get distributed to almost 40 partner organizations leading to 1,600 people each month getting nutritious, homemade meals prepared with love.

Community Cooks started over 30 years ago in Somerville when volunteers would drive a musical van around blasting Beethoven's Ode to Joy while picking up donated food. And that, folks, is just about the best image my mind can conjure. And if you're not familiar with this absolute Beethoven Banger, check it out. Things really start blasting off at minute 7.

And they have been pouring their hearts into it ever since. 30 years and hundreds of thousands of meals cooked and people lovingly served. In their words:

"We believe that sharing food provides more than physical nourishment alone. For our neighbors experiencing food insecurity, our home-cooked meals are a sign of solidarity and care—a way for us to affirm you matter."

When the atmosphere feels impossibly ominous and slightly out of control, it is wonderfully grounding to look around and see great people doing good things for all the right reasons.

Ode to Joy, indeed.

Recipes

Tuna Pasta with Capers: This recipe uses canned tuna but you could use any canned fish. I go heavy on the capers and add any herbs kicking around the fridge. Oh, and black olives. Oh, and a glass of white wine.

Bacon and Mushroom Pasta: a meatier option for your pasta from Deano's. Even with a sweeter bacon, this dish delivers.

Beets with Orange zest: A great side for any holiday spread.
