La Colaborativa

Hello,

We are doing another dry goods drive to collect items for our neighbors and friends facing food insecurity.

If you have been around Family Dinner for a while, you know we are huge fans of the work of La Colaborativa in Chelsea, MA. They are a Latina led organization working to support Latinx immigrants in the Greater Boston area. Their Executive Director, Gladys Vega (pictured, left) is an absolute force of a human being. Tireless in her work ethic and integrity, she is truly a marvel as is her entire team.

Inspiring words from their site:

"We work in partnership with Latinx immigrants to design and deliver an array of programs, initiatives, and community organizing campaigns that serve, protect, celebrate, and uplift our people. We focus on food and housing security, economic advancement, cultural celebration, and immigrant leadership that drives policy and systems changes that benefit our communities over the long-term."

At Family Dinner, we are a partner in their fight against food insecurity. This partnership started at the height of the pandemic with our first food drive. So many of you were around then and donated goods, which we picked up, sorted and drove to Chelsea. We filled my pickup truck to the brim and drove it over to Chelsea, seven times in one day. Seven. And we're good at Tetris, that's how full the truck was.

We have been doing it ever since, and here we go again.

How it works:

The folks at La Colaborativa are looking for pantry basics: beans, rice, oatmeal, cereal, oil and sugar. If you have these items, please leave them out on your delivery day and your driver will take them between now and the end of the month!

Outside pantry items they are very much in need of diapers of any size and quantity.

We will sort the items, pack our trucks with them and head to Chelsea.

Family Dinner will be adding a few hundred pounds of local meats to the bounty hoping to make folks' holiday tables a bit tastier.

Man, I love this drive each year and we really love getting to do this with this incredible community of folks. Thank you.

Chicken and Caramelized Onions: I have a mountain of yellow onions to get through and this is my go to. If you don't have the NYT cooking, there are other versions of this out there!

Blackened Baked Red fish: This fish is light and sweet, with no oily taste. You can also pry fry with the same seasoning.

Fried rice: If you have been around these parts long enough you know we LOVE some fried rice. If you are staring down some old veggies in your frige; kale, onions, mustard greens. Throw 'em in here.

Recipes (ME + NH)

The Best Seared Scallops Recipe - First scallops of the season! I'm pretty excited. These lil' morsels are dang expensive which gives people the vapors but this is an excellent primer to help demystify and build some confidence. Personally? I'd eat them raw so I tend sear a bit harder and then err on the side of them being under-done.

Mexican Stewed Beans - Super simple and remarkably satisfying. Ususally made with pinto beans, Milk Street suggests subbing with cranberry beans as they plump out wonderfully and are creamy as heck. And whuddya know? Most of you are getting cranberry beans this week! (Milk Street has a paywall so, if you're not buying, here's another recipe.)

Chicken Stew With Sweet Potatoes and Black Beans - This is one of those dishes that is so tasty, that you forget how incidentally healthy it is.

Crispy Mushroom Tacos - Don't be afraid to push the searing, here. Like cabbage, mushrooms can be cooked harder and darker without turning into an acrid disaster.
