A love affair....

A love affair....

Good Morning!

Before we get into how Togue Brawn, pictured, is changing the way we think about scallops, a few notes:

Valentine's Menu

Like it or not, Valentine's Day is upon us. (If Valentine's Day is not your thing, you can also refer to it as our own Shannon Largey's Half Birthday (SLHB) also Feb 14th Happy Half Birthday, Shan!). This day normally means comically large boxes of mediocre chocolates and nauseating jewelry commercials that would have you shot putting your TV out the window if you weren't so concerned with being a litterbug.

We will skip the mushy hullaballoo about which color roses and violets are and get right to the point:

The simple and irrefutable equation that Food = Love led us to draw up a delightfully rich and fun collection of Valentine's Day Add-Ons. Beautiful Rib Eyes from Feather Brook Farms, Lobster Tails from Red's Best, Pasta, Sauces and YES, Focaccia from Fox & The Knife, Baguette, Cheese, Cookies from Forge and more! Plan a fancy dinner or just stock up the freezer with future delights!

And while you are watching another bile-inducing commercial about how diamonds are the greatest thing to ever happen in a woman's life (wait, we don't have the right to vote yet, do we...?), just remember:

Every Kiss Begins with Kay MEATS!

Maine Fishmonger Extraordinaire:

As a fisheries manager, Togue Brawn changed the way Maine manages its scallop fishery, leading to a dramatic recovery of the resource. Now, in her words, she's on a mission to show the world what scallops are supposed to taste like with her company Downeast Dayboat.
"Maine produces less than 2% of US sea scallops and they do it very differently.  While federal boats can stay at sea for a week or more at a time, Maine boats stay close to shore and bring back their pristine catch within hours.  Downeast Dayboat gives those scallops the respect they deserve, making sure they're in Fed Ex boxes on their way to consumers within 24 hours of harvest. Unlike most fishmongers, Downeast Dayboat doesn't have a warehouse: their scallops stay on the ocean floor until you order them."
Togue has a simple goal: "I want my fishermen to make a decent living and I want you to taste pure, delicious seafood, the likes of which you can’t get anywhere else."
These little beauties are coming to you in the Double Shares and the Pescatarian Shares this week. You can always order them directly from Togue and she will ship them to you same day.

RECIPES

(from Shannon)

Chorizo Stuffed Squash - Still have some old greens or sad looking veg? A good stuffed squash is a great fridge-emptying dish to throw them into!

Scallops and Apple Pan Sauce - This just looks like candy!

Celeriac and Apple Soup - This sounds so delightful! I pulled this recipe from a list that also has more information about handling celery root you may find interesting!

Tomato-less Roasted Veg Pizza Sauce - More of a winter twist for our beloved pizza dough!

** Shannon's Food and Farming Friday Fun Fact: Koginut squash is a variety made popular by Dan Barber as a chosen seed in his bespoke seed company, Row 7. The company highlights incredibly flavored vegetables bred by some of the best plant breeders in the country! Regardless, I think these squashes are absolutely ADORABLE, and I can't wait to see what you make with them! :)
