Report Card.
Maybe you're like me and the words "report" and "card" together still send a little frisson of fear down your spine. Maybe you dreaded bringing that little paper demon home each quarter knowing the inevitable sighs of disappointment that would greet it.
My grades were always fine, but the comments were cringe-worthy; there are only so many ways a teacher can say "your child is incapable of sitting still and never stops talking." A personal favorite was "Erin would talk to a tree if she thought it would talk back." Charming.
Fear not, friends! In this report card are no grades for Calculus or Physics, and we won't be commenting on your overly energetic comportment. This is just a quick run down of the charitable work Family Dinner has done over the last month.
In January we committed ourselves to donating at least $3,000 a month to local food banks and organizations fighting food insecurity. We want to do this by buying food directly from local producers, growers, and makers who themselves are struggling in the pandemic. On top of what we have committed monthly, you all donated over $4,200 to add to this effort. Here is a snapshot of what we have done so far and what is on the horizon:
In January 2021, Family Dinner donated $3977 worth of food to people in need:
$1779 to La Colaborativa in Chelsea (Produce, Eggs, and Pasta)
$1500 to La Colaborativa in the form of 300 loaves of bread we purchased from A&J King
$ 698 in meals prepared by Forge to 4 local shelters
Along with truckloads and truckloads of dry goods from all of you! Thank you so much for helping us help our communities!

Cottage Pie - This has been a snowy week and more snow is on the way. My favorite shoveling time food is cottage pie (Shepherd's only if I happen to have lamb!) that I keep warm in the oven 'til I come back in, covered in snow and ready to devour! Have root veggies? Throw them in with the meat or add to the mashed top! Boil the turnips with the potatoes and add a stick of butter, that should do the trick.
Scrambled Tofu with Potatoes and Mushrooms - So hearty and delightful!
Pan-Seared Sea Bass with Arugula and Warm Vinaigrette - This recipe makes me think that maybe spring is around the corner. (35 days if anyone is counting!)
