COOKISH

I'm willing to admit to having a cookbook problem. Well, technically two problems. First, I can't seem to stop buying them and second, I can't seem to use them for their intended purpose. So many of them are like museum pieces, oohed- and aahed over at first review and then rarely referred to again.  A great example the gastronomic magnum opus "Paul Bocuse: The Complete Recipes"; the exhaustive collection of the French Masterchef. It includes such works as Le Lievre a la Royale;  a wild rabbit with foie gras and truffles cooked in a sauce of its own blood. Doesn't exactly scream Approachable Weeknight Meal.

Dinner can occasionally be a daunting drudgery. I get all twisted in a hurricane of laziness and find myself making the same things on repeat turning every item in my fridge into, yet another, quesadilla.

At our last visit to our friends at Milk Street, they made our day by gifting us a copy of their most recent book "Cookish" a brilliant ode to the home cook who is still striving for creativity.  Each recipe has 6 ingredients or fewer and its written in the spirit of "Throw it Together". Pasta with Parmesan Cream has been on repeat ever since.

This book came at just the right time. It meets folks where they are in the hectic whirlwind of life and shows that cooking can be fun again. Take a peek and let us know what you think.

Looking for more unfussy and beautiful recipes in the same vein? Check out the NYT "No Recipe Recipes" The Weeknight Fried rice will sing to your hungry soul.  And as always, visit your local bookstore to make your purchases. Jeff doesn't need any more of your money.

RECIPES (MA)

(from Shannon)

Stew Beef - I will say, stews are in my top favorite foods of all time. As my name may allude to, I do enjoy a boiled dinner. However, if you are not feeling very stew-y, here are fourteen other ways to use stew beef!

Kale Pizza - Trust the process, adding greens to your pizza is a total game changer for the better!

Monkfish "Lobster Roll" - In the latest report from the pier, the high winds lately have kept many lobster boats in which will mean the price on lobster will be rising. However, Fear thee not! This is a team favorite recipe for a "poor man's lobster roll"!

Beet and Carrot Slaw - A bright side for any weeknight dinner! Also, don't forget to use those greens

Sautéed Radicchio and Shallot Salata -  Enjoy this any night!

Baked Apple - If you're craving a little something sweet, try out this simple recipe!

Potato and Haddock Gratin - Put on your stretchy pants and eat up all this goodness!

RECIPES (ME/NH)

(from Joe)

Chicken Shawarma There are myriad recipes but this one is super easy *and* has a nice cabbage slaw recipe to boot. And you know who’s going to be good friends with your shawarma? The tahini dip from Shovel & Spoon.
Sheet Pan Chicken with Cabbage and Apples Speaking of easy… Sheet tray chicken and vegetables is pretty foolproof and always a pretty solid choice for weeknight dinner. (C'mon... the name of the site is "A Calculated Whisk"? Clearly of the same clan as Family Dinner.)
Black Futsu with Hazelnuts Erin sent this over and it looks pretty amazing. Black Futsu are creamy, nutty and a lil' bit sweet. They're also quite cool looking and can double as decor. Let's all hope that that's the first and last decorating tip you'll see here.
Monkfish Stew with Saffron Broth With winter solstice around the corner, tucking into this for dinner will help you get through the long night.
Pea Shoots Pasta This is endlessly riff-able and shows off a bit of pea shoot versatility.
