Snack more, waste less.

Good morning,

First off, please please please return your bags. We love them and miss them! We don't want to be wasteful and just buy more so we appreciate you sending them back our way. I hope this simple email plea is compelling and I don't have to resort to improv song and dance. "Baby Got Bag" by Sir Mix-a Lot maybe?

Second, this week has been about 4,376 days long and we are all some kind of tired. I feel you and I'm with you.

For this week's newsletter we are going to peer into three little bright spots that make our week just a bit shinier. (And don't worry. We will go back to raging about social justice again soon. And YES we did already give all of our money away to the causes we care most about. The Trevor Project. The ACLU. Community Cooks. La Colaborativa. Thank you for asking.)

Joy Time. Here we go:

Ancient art and Chance encounters: This week the NYT ran an article about an Egyptian security guard at the Metropolitan museum who was sharing his passion for the art of his homeland with a stranger at the museum. The guard himself was an artist, a sculptor. The "stranger" was a MET curator who, through the magical glitter of the universe became enamored with the guards work and commissioned a piece from him for a show at the museum. Everyone's dreams come through and the warm fuzzies abound! Does this have anything to do with food? Sure doesn't but man is it great.

Unbridled Joy: This is an oldie but a goodie. A 4 minute piece from This American Life about the delight a five year old feels about his first bus ride to school. It's called Squeals on the Bus and I promise you - you need these 4 minutes in your day. Hell, I book marked it and return regularly for a dose of joy.

Broccomole: Brocco-what? You heard me. It's Broccomole week from the great folks at Maine Spreads (pictured above). These are snacks you can really feel good about. In 2022 Matt and Ben were looking to make a product that could use up items within the food system that were falling through the cracks. Misshapen, or otherwise unwanted vegetables became the first target with the 2022 launch of 3 veggie spreads including this week's start the Broccomole. This is healthy snacking that creates greater opportunities for hard working farmers and also addresses some of the food waste that is cutting into the efficiency of our food system. Snack on friends, you can feel good about it!

Recipes

Sea Bass With Beans and Tarragon - Sea bass is such an approachable piece of seafood. Super flavor with no fishy aftertaste. That's why, when it's available, we try and get it out to all of you. And this recipe sounds delicious and you can absolutely use the wonderful heirloom soup beans here (just keep in mind they're a bit smaller than cannellini beans so will cook a bit quicker).

15 Bean Soup - So damn satisfying. If you're anything like this household, you have a major bean problem - just can't get enough. And this time of year, this recipe is perfect.

Make-Ahead Sweet Potato and Chorizo Breakfast Burritos - Whenever Erin is in town (I'm in Portland, ME), if she's early enough we try and hit up Lenora (same proprietors of Lone Star Taco Bar and Deep Ellum in Metro Boston) for their super tasty, gotta have two, breakfast burritos. This recipe is a fine facsimile and I love that it's make ahead. Perfect for a crowd (or when your family is gonna have two each).
