Busy Bees

The ground is frozen, the trees are barren and the weathermen are being vilified for the atrocity of their predictions this week that almost drove us to the brink of insanity.

It feels like we are deep in the belly of winter, grumbling about our achy joints, snow days that weren't and the overabundance of root vegetables.

But cheer up butter cups! There is reason for optimism.

On all your local farms the teams have their eyes on the horizon of spring. Greenhouses are coming alive with activity as next seasons crops come to life in the form of little seeds tucked into plugs of soil. They are lovingly nurtured and toasted up by the sun and soon little sparks of green will light up the space, like an aurora borealis of dirt and sprouts. Too far? Too optimistic? Fine. But fun things are afoot.

Heres a few things they are up to:

⁃ It's Lambing season! The Barn is full of babies with a few more on the way.

⁃ Also officially seeding 2024 crops (greens for spring CSA, onions, peppers, herbs)

⁃ The good fun of mucking the barn and spreading manure to fields for nutrients

- They have a new border collie, Crow and training her to herd sheep!

White fish stew: Are you one of those folks, like me, with a mountain of fish in your freezer? Let's get into that. Take a few packs out. How about this white fish stew with this week's pollock or last week's sea bass? Maybe some fish tacos for lunch tomorrow with what's left over.

Chicken Sausage Skillet: Speaking of all those leftovers. How about a skillet that gets all your veg into one pan. Potatoes, carrots, onions, turnips. Toss some leftover spinach in at the end, why not?

Mushroom Swiss Omelette: A perfect meal for any time of day. I'll add some sauteed onions to mine for some extra buttery goodness.

Sheet Pan Sausage and Peppers with Sweet Potatoes - These baharat chicken sausages from Vernon Family Farms would be a darn tasty stand in for the Italian sausage.

Curried Swordfish With Tomatoes, Greens and Garlic Toast - Oh man this is very up my alley. I'd actually throw the baharat chicken sausage in here, too!

Veggie Burger Melt - I really just want to call attention to the fact that the scala bread from Rosemont that is in most of your shares is a perfect bread for a cheesey, melty sandwich and using it to make a veggie burger patty melt with some caramelized onions and some swiss cheese would really be the respectful thing to do. Or a grilled cheese to dip into...
