Pasta with Pizzazz

Meet Hala and Dean Matarazzo, the dynamic duo behind Deano's Pasta in Somerville.

We're having a bit of a pasta party here at Family Dinner this week with their delicious goods coming into the Vegetarian shares (as well as the Ravioli of the Week and the Fresh Pasta of the Week in MA as well!) They are 4th generation pasta makers, one of the oldest in the country and have been hand-crafting deliciousness since 1947.

We have been working with Hala and Dean at Family Dinner since the beginning** and they are a shining example of why working with small local businesses is such a joy. They're great people who crank out delicious food and deeply care about the product and the community.

** here we mean the beginning of Family Dinner, not Deano's. Though it feels like we started Family Dinner in 1947 and I'm a hundred years old - that's just me dabbling in hyperbole.

They are also incredibly gracious and accommodating and respond to each message personally. That warmth and the attention to detail are just a few of the many things that are lost in the maelstrom of the multinational food system. (I'll save the detailed horrors of Big Agriculture and Big Food for another day, you are spared from a soapbox rant... at least for another week.)

Recipes (MA)

Chicken Caesar Pita: This is an all time favorite. I cheat by adding some shredded mozz to the pita before heating and serving the whole thing open face. The photo here is totally hideous but it gives you the idea.

Pizza Pita - Are we sensing a theme here? Sure are. It's bread and cheese and more bread. Saute some of the ground beef for a touch of protein.

Beef Kofta - Another amazing dish to use up that pita with a bit more spice.

Philly Cheesesteak on the Griddle - You're probably not gonna get an output as tasty as Salvatore's but you can get pretty close. And we've taking care of a big chunk of the work by providing the steak already shaved.

Thai Beef Drunken Noodles - The takeout dish of my dreams, made at home. (And made in less time it would take to have it delivered.)

Scallop Aguachile With Jalapeño, Cucumber, and Avocado - Watching these days get ever so slightly longer has me thinking of summer and, since scallops are currently in season, this is will help scratch the warm weather itch a lil' bit. And I hate to sound redundant but this screams for a margarita. Maybe mix it up a little with a spicy version.
