A little help...

Historic flooding of the Connecticut River and others has left local farmers reeling and caused millions of dollars in damages in the state.

Fields with late adolescent corn, or hay ready to be rolled are under lakes of muddy water, unrecoverable and unsellable.

Farmers take almost all their risk in advance; buying seeds, readying the soil, paying for labor, water, tools. The expenses pile and pile up until harvest, when it's finally time to move the ledger from red to black. These extreme climate events; late frost, Canadian wild fires and more; lead to really difficult seasons and devastating losses. You can learn more here.

We will be donating this week to the Vermont Farm Fund, which provides funding directly to farmers who apply for emergency relief. They are seeing these requests in unprecedented numbers. If you are interested in adding a small donation, you can do so here.

Recipes (MA)

Crispy Crusted Hake: This recipe called for a special kind of cereal as the crust. I think you can sub in anything; bread crumbs, saltines, Ritz Crackers. It will go beautifully with grilled onions or any of your summer veggies.

Summer Taco Bowl Salad: Maybe the most forgiving of recipes. Use your lettuce, a left over tomato, grill the onions and use their tops. Everything can live in one bowl under a blanket of shredded cheese.

Grilled Cauliflower Steaks: Trust us, delicious.

Recipes (ME + NH)

BBQ Chicken - As Sam Sifton says at the top, "Barbecued chicken isn’t, really: It’s grilled rather than smoke-roasted at low temperature." That said, it's a pillar of summer cookouts and this is a great recipe. Paywall but you can find other versions. And if you're looking to make your own sauce, the NYT version is solid (paywall again, duh) but I generally turn to the Serious Eats one.

Roasted chicken with clementines & Arak - This is so dang tasty. A bit of extra work compared to a typical weeknight meal (though worth it if you've got the time), it's a great dish for the weekend and/or when you're having buds over for dinner.

Grilled Smashed Potatoes - We've got some new potatoes coming up! They'll be a lil' sweeter, more moist and thinner skinned than what we've been eating all winter. And this recipe results in a downright addictive side dish.

Sheet Pan Cod and Potatoes - Classic flavors punched up with some green olives and mustard.
