Moooooving In
When we started our operation in Portland, Maine, Joe (Family Dinner Maine and NH General Manager and long time best bud) and I had the distinct joy of bopping around Maine in his Prius with cat themed plates, meeting farmers, learning their storied traditions and getting excited about having their goods in your shares.
One of those magical places was Pine Ridge Acres in Cumberland, Maine. Pine Ridge, run by Evan Putnam and his team, is nestled in rolling, verdant hills with cows lazily dotting the horizon. It's the physical manifestation of what your mind pulls up when it hears the word "farm". Simply idyllic.
A bit about them in their own words:
"You will see our cattle and crops grow along picturesque fields in Falmouth and Cumberland, Maine. Beginning in 2005, a local family stepped forward to steward these lands for future generations while helping to maintain our state’s agricultural heritage. A big part of that comes from growing great food. We value the importance of supporting local agriculture and want our customers to be able to know where their food comes from.
In addition to our animals, during the summers we focus on land and crop management in our fields. We work in tandem with many local neighbors to help maintain and preserve their fields as well. Through these mutually beneficial relationships, we are able to diligently produce top quality hay that feeds our own animals year round as well as many nearby farms. In the fall we harvest the pumpkins, gourds and squash that we planted earlier in the summer. Pine Ridge Acres works hard to be a supportive member of the Maine farming community by providing our customers with a wide range of food and products that will feed their own families and allow their homes to grow."
This attention to details at all levels results in an incredibly high quality product. In short, super tasty beef you can feel wicked good about.
If you ever find yourself in Cumberland, check out their farm store. Beautiful cuts of their meat and an abundance of local products. It's always open, and operates on the honor system.

Recipes (ME + NH)
Char Siu Chicken - Char siu... drooooool. Generally a pork preparation, it's equally delicious with chicken. Would definitely serve alongside some Daikon Carrot Stir Fry. And, for you vegetarian share folks, you could definitely use the tempeh you're receiving this week or tofu.
Any Vegetable Stir-Fry - I love this recipe (paywall... sorry!). Use what you got. Or better, be inspired by what's local seasonal and local (and currently in your fridge). And this week's share has some great veg combos you can toss in here.
Maple-Glazed Hakurei Turnip and Shiitake - We make this as soon as hakurei turnips are in season in the spring. And then continue to make it. It's dang tasty. We couldn't score local soba but the angel hair is a solid stand in here or in other noddle dishes.
Blackened Mahi Mahi - I love me some mahi mahi. Like halibut, it stands up great to bigger flavors and is excellent grilled (it is 51º today, after all). But I'm willing to bet most of you aren't braving the outdoors so this recipe will serve as a solid stand in.
Steamed Black Bass with Ginger and Scallions - We've been leaning heavily on recipes like this whenever we're doing whole fish. Super flavorful and pretty fun to eat (I basically ditch cutlery altogether and dive in fingers first... I'm gross).
