The In Between

The In Between

Hello Family Dinner!

Erin and Tim took some much deserved time off this week, so it’s Shannon here on the keys!

September is an interesting time in the fields and in life. It's a time when we are coming off of our summer vegetable high, and start to burrow into the fall vegetables - as the air gets brisker and sweaters come out. This time poses an opportunity in the kitchen where the last of the fresh field tomatoes can make it into a pot (before the heavy frosts take them away), and can be combined with some of the delicious offerings that those frosts bring, like our brassica buddies! Basically, in one pot we can both be looking back on the past season as well as looking forward to changes that will be brought about in the new autumnal season starting on Tuesday.

A few of our farmers expressed their concern for this weekend, as many will likely have a frost. Although frosts mean an end to many of our favorites like tomatoes and peppers, it is not all bad and something we should look forward to. Like many long time New Englanders, the frost does make some crops sweeter. I’m thinking of our buddies like kale, spinach, carrots, and more.

This was a season which unfolded a lot differently than many of our farmers expected when they started seeding, lambing, or even before they finished clearing out winter debris. We are so grateful for all the hard work they have done to keep us fed and the work they continue to do to feed us through the winter! We are excited for this in-between time and all the deliciousness that will be cooked up by the intersecting seasons.

RECIPES

Grilled Swordfish with Smoky Tomato-Anchovy Salsa: Make a play on this salsa with the peppers and tomatoes in the share and what you have in the spice cabinet!

Broccoli Tots: I'm not obsessed with Tots, they are just so fun!

Spanish Rice: Again see what's in your spice rack and enjoy simmering tomatoes in ground beef, there's nothing quite like it!

Baked Pears: Enough said. My absolute favorite this time of year!
