The best damn bread.

Before we slice into the bread convo, quick reminder that we'll be launching our Mother's Day preorders. We'll start these up next week on Tuesday, April 28th and will be shutting them down by end of day Monday, May 5th. We'll be showcasing Fox & the Knife pasta and sauces as well as their taleggio stuffed focaccia (that should be illegal). And there'll be a whole bunch of Mother's Day brunch goodness. Stay tuned for more intel... Onto the bread!

This week we have anadama bread from our friends at A&J King. "Anadama bread is a traditional, slightly sweet, and hearty yeast bread from New England made with wheat flour, cornmeal, and molasses. It has a distinctive yellow-brown color, a soft yet slightly chewy texture from the cornmeal porridge added to the dough, and is excellent for toasting." (Thanks oddly human AI explanation!)

Andy and Jackie mill their own cornmeal from corn from New York State with the giant mill in their bakery (very cool to see).

AI tells us it's great for toasting, and who am I to argue with a Gemini, but I think this bread is perfect for sammies. I'm going full Monte Cristo on this. The marriage of ham, cheese and turkey in bread dipped in an egg batter and griddled to giddy perfection. Due to the sweetness of this bread I'll skip the jam in favor of some super punchy French Mustard. (My personal favorite comes in this cute little clay pot. Makes an excellent house gift.)

Given its status as a distant, 4th cousin of the iconic croque monsieur, you might be curious if the Monte Cristo sammy was named after the Count of Monte Cristo, Le Comte de Monte-Cristo, the famous novel by French author Alexandre Dumas written in 1844. An excellent question, as the book, a story of a young man accused of treason and sent to exiled imprisonment on an island called "If" who then reinvents himself as a wealthy traveler and seeks revenge with those who wronged him, contains as much intrigue and as many plot twists as the sandwiches.

Alas no, nerdy foodie bibliophiles. There is no connection - but I appreciate the curiosity.

It's salad galore this cycle! We couldn't resist getting in the Euro Cukes from L'Abri Vegetal. Yeah, they're just north of the border but they do really amazing work. The literal translation is The Plant Shelter and they grow amazing produce year-round in their organic greenhouses. Anyway. Recipes!

Cucumber-Tomato Salad With Garden Herbs - This is where it's at. Amazing side to just about anything.

Little Gem Salad - Any leafy head of lettuce would do, here. I'm also a big fan of mixing some tahini in with the dressing.

Simple Grilled Halibut - On the non-salad front, we've got halibut for some of you! This is one of my fav fishes to grill. Excellent alongside that little gem salad.
