Peeling the Garlic

Peel the Garlic.

Because I have copious time on my hands, and zero critical stressors that are eating at my brain like some parasitic monster, I have taken to reading a lot of poetry recently.

There is the obvious beauty of "Time is a Mother" by Ocean Vuong, the old reliability of Neruda's odes to simple things. They are tiny moments of escape, inviting wonder, demanding pause.

Because Mark Zuckerberg lives in our heads like the aforementioned parasitic monster, I have also been getting pushed a lot of poetry on social media. The above poem "Small Inconveniences" by Elise M. Powers caught my eye because I'm a sucker for any single mention of Anthony Bourdain, that silver haired minx.

I read it quickly, and then submitted to what it demanded. A slow read, a purposeful one. A call to enjoy something small, whether it's in our kitchens this weekend, peeling garlic and listening to heated butter sing, or a slow stroll around a museum, or taking one more moment to stare into your dog's eyes and telling them, for the one billionth time, that they are the best dog in the whole wide world.

I'm as guilty as anyone of rushing through food or eating just for calories in between tasks on an interminable to-do list. I recently enjoyed a hearty bowl of beef stew while driving in the truck on 95N (the hint is a touch of cayenne), for example.

This poem invites us to take a moment to savor something, anything - possibly in an effort to combat the waves of overwhelm and the noise. Or maybe just because more garlic is always the answer.

Last we had dried peppers, we had a few folks who wrote in for some cooking tips.

Fried eggs, avocado toast (with everything bagel season, of course), any proteins... Hell, it's even delicious poured over vanilla ice cream. Seriously.
