Joe has a couple new products he's excited to share with you this week. He won't stop jumping around and clapping with glee, it's rather annoying. [LIES - JG]

Says Joe:

Sourdough ancient grains bread! Sliced bread! Cheese! More options for 'rogi and dumplings! Beans! Dried AND canned. (We don't mess around.) And more. Plus? We'll be adding more goodies in the coming weeks so keep an eye out.

We're ever so thankful for all the responses we received from the survey we sent out a handful of weeks back. And to anyone who's written in with a request. ❤️

First we have beans from Baer's Best. While these are not a new product in your Fam Din shares, they are pretty special.

Charley and Carol Baer, pictured, have operated Baer’s Best Beans in Maine for over three decades. They specialize in producing heirloom bean varieties that have grown here in the Northeast since colonial days.

The Blue Hill Co-op in Blue Hill, Maine (which is a stunning locket of land tucked into the Maine coast, home of the best blueberry muffins you will ever eat, made by my uncle) did a story on Charley a few years ago. I'm stealing their words here first because it's 6:42 am and time to make the ten bagillionth round of French Toast for these kids, and also because it's penned in a perfectly charming manner.

"Charley got his start growing beans in Central Maine in the 1980’s. By this time, dry bean production had already been moving further west and onto ever-larger farms for decades. As with so many things, regional specialties and rare varieties were abandoned in favor of uniform fields.

With a fleet of mid-century farm equipment and a handful of classic New England heirlooms from friends and fellow farmers, Baer’s Best was born. The growing operation has moved from one farm to another over the years and added more equipment, and all the while Charley has continued collecting bean varieties. Now, in its third decade of growing and supplying beans, Baer’s Best is located in South Berwick, Maine, where they grow a rotating cast of over 20 varieties of beans, which includes both heirlooms and some modern standards, as well. Many of Baer’s Best varieties are no longer grown commercially anywhere else."

Special indeed. Joe, giddy bean aficionado that he is, has some recipes for you below. Charley also has a few ideas on his page.

Next up we have polenta from Maine Grains. Polenta, if you aren't familiar with its general deliciousness, is ground cornmeal that can be served as a creamy, porridge style dish (more butter please!) or grilled/sauteed once solidified. It's super easy to make and incredibly versatile. I prefer the porridge style, with all the butter and parm one can responsibly eat. You could round up any of the sad veggies in your fridge and bring them back to life in a saute pan for a bit of color and sharpness. The New York Times want you to do one better and dig into this polenta, black beans and chard recipe. It's like they read our minds.
