KEEPING IT FRESH!

KEEPING IT FRESH!

Shannon here! If you've come to us at Family Dinner, I have to assume that you care about your food. You want to make sure that it's local, healthy, and that it's good for you, the community, and the environment. And we love that about you and love serving you all this local, seasonal bounty! Sometimes, though, you may not get to that beautiful bunch of kale right away or are questioning what fruit is okay to leave on the counter or the fridge.

First off, it's okay, it happens to all of us! We wanted to share some resources with you so that you can store your veg with confidence and get the most out of each item in your share even if you do not get to using it right away!

To start, there are some really great resources out there on food storage including these articles from Kitchn and the New York Times

Some of the team's favorite tips:

  • Get a GIANT Ziploc-type bag to store your greens (i.e., lettuce/kale/chard) in, add a damp paper towel and enjoy your greens for literal weeks. I wash out and re-use this bag over and over again so it does not just immediately become waste.  (And just know, my Grannie will be very proud of you.)
  • Not fully soft/ripe stone fruit? Stick them in a paper bag on the counter. Once they are ripe, though, immediately store in the fridge.
  • Not everyone loves the fridge--I'm thinking of things like tomatoes and bananas which will lose flavor and turn grey, respectively. On the flip side, as beautiful as they are on a counter, you can store lemons for almost a month in the fridge. This Kitchn article does a great job talking about specific types of fruit and veg.
  • Our favorite ways to use up items? Let's talk: quiche, frittata, soup, pesto, crumbles, so many things to choose from!
  • Stock Bag - now, if you don't have a bag in your freezer for your veggie scraps, what are you doing?? Save those scraps and add them to a bag in your freezer. When you're ready to make some stock, dump them in instead of fresh veg!

Additionally, we do have a page on our site dedicated to storage tips. You can find it here and it will also be linked forever more in this newsletter down in the recipes section!

If you ever have questions, feel free to reach out! We always love hearing from you: hello@sharefamilydinner.com.
