Onto the show:
Hi folks, it’s Em back with another newsletter! This week’s stormy weather made me want to stay inside curled up with a good book. Speaking of the wacky weather, I wanted to tell you all about the impact the climate has had on crop growing patterns across Massachusetts and New England.
This year in particular we are dealing with some exciting climate events which are leading to some extremely peculiar conditions across the globe. Recently, we saw the arrival of El Niño Southern Oscillation, or simply, El Niño. This climate event occurs when trade winds weaken which causes warm ocean water to pool in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific. El Niño sets off a chain reaction impacting the entire globe's climate system. Regardless of El Niño’s presence we have had record breaking heat for the third year in a row. Yikes! I hope everyone is doing their best to stay cool.
Not only have the days been hot but they have also been incredibly dry! I know it sounds a little adverse to the events of this week’s stormy weather, however, as of early June, according to a study conducted at UMass Amherst, approximately 97% of the land in Massachusetts was classified as “abnormally dry” with 59% of the land being classified as “moderate drought.” Due to the abnormal weather conditions this summer, such lack of rain and extreme temperatures, certain fruits, and early summer produce that depend on irrigation have been highly impacted. That is why heartier produce, such as parsnips, have been doing so well because they have deeper roots and don’t need as much water.
The next time you look at your produce, I implore you to think about the resilience of the crops this summer and their ability to thrive under the drastic extremes they are facing. If they can do it, so can you!
Enjoy your weekend,
