Ballers of Family Dinner.

Ballers of Family Dinner.

Good Morning!

We had an amazing time volunteering and donating shares to the Boston Barbie for Brushfire Support this Thursday. This incredible event was organized by Sam Jackson, Owner and Chef at KO Pies in Eastie and Aussie native. He put together a wildly talented line-up of local chefs, and sold over 300 tickets to a Barbie held at Capo Supper Club in South Boston.

People's generosity flowed like all the delicious donated liquor - they raised over $100k!  Beyond the Thursday event Sam pointed folks to international fundraising events to support the wild life affected. From Sam:

"All proceeds will be passed on to a number of amazing services that have made it their priority to take care of injured wildlife, RSCPA https://www.rspca.org.au, WWF https://www.wwf.org.au/get-involved/bushfire-emergency#gs.q8rocu, WIRES https://www.wires.org.au . This hell has only just begun, and it won’t end when the fires go out. NSW alone has lost a third of its koala population. Millions of animals need our help."

At Family Dinner we love to donate to local charities doing good work. If you have an idea for us regarding a cause near and dear to you, let us know. We would love to hear about it and help if we can.

Have a wonderful day!

BALLERS OF FAMILY DINNER

Let's talk Sports!

Wait, wait! - don't go away just yet. I'm not talking about the corporate juggernaut that is about to land in Miami with its pithy beer commercials, questionable ethics and scantily clad cheerleaders.

No. This weekend, while every television station and news outlet is laser focused on the Superbowl we want to dedicate our humble soapbox to Women's Sports and some of the local Super Stars who also just happen to be Family Dinner members. (And yes, we do take credit for all of their successes. You can't win Championships without a balanced diet of local food.)

Boston is a city that is no stranger to Championships and that tradition of excellence is extended by two teams who are dear to us:

The Brute Squad Ultimate Frisbee TEAM has won three National Championships and three Open Championships since its inception in 2002.  The sheer grit and athleticism these women display is awe-inspiring. Never seen Ultimate Frisbee? Still think we're talking about shoeless dudes smoking weed on the Quad? Check out the video on their site, above. These ladies are BEASTS. They start to have events and tryouts in April. Follow them on IG to show them some love, and to learn about upcoming games.

The Boston Renegades are a semi-pro Women's Tackle Football team and proud winners of the 2018 and 2019 National WFA Championships. Combining some of the best athletes the sport has ever seen and top-tier management, the Renegades are aiming to take Women’s Football to new levels of national prominence. On the field you can come see the Renegades chasing the 2020 Championship at Harry della Russo Stadium in Revere, Mass starting in April.  Off the field you can find them at community events, schools and Boys and Girls Club events, sharing the message of the sport and empowering the next generation of young athletes to aim for greatness. Follow them @bostonrenegades to see more!

I didn't need the Women's National Soccer team to tell me about gender inequity in sports. You can see it throughout the media and every time ESPN shows Corn Hole Championships over Women's Collegiate Sports (which makes me want to scream until my eyes bleed).

But I am inspired by all of the women on these teams who work demanding full time jobs, train long hours and zig zag across the country for games and tournaments with little recognition or fanfare. All for the love of the sport, all fueled on local food from Family Dinner. :)

So if you need me this weekend I'll be watching the USWNT at the Olympic Qualifiers with a big plate of Nachos. We can't wait to hear what you're watching and even more, what you're cooking.

RECIPES

White Bean Dip: You can skip the herbs and add really anything you want: more lemon, gobs of garlic - this is a throwback for last week's beans if they haven't been used

Meat and Potato Stuffing: I like that this is also a bit of a blank canvas. And it looks like something we could have a big pot of and use all week for lunches, burrito filling or as a "hash" for brunch

Sweet and Sour Napa Cabbage Wedges:  A quick and easy way to get your brassica on.

Cabbage Nachos: Why not? Call it a salad.

Beef and Cabbage Stir Fry: Meal Prep! This relies on some Asian Pantry ingredients but is also a chance to get rid of some of your carrots or even parsnips you have kicking around.
