A Saucy Legend.

A Saucy Legend.

A Saucy Legend.

Chef Daryl Alston has been working tirelessly at the Chef game since the 80's. He was the proud owner of a local restaurant for many years, the cornerstones of which were his secret sauces and a bean pie that people would crawl over their own mothers to get to.

Due to forces outside his control the restaurant closed, but people's desperate clamor for his sauces was not silenced. To appease the masses he started Chef Daryl's Sauce and the eponymous institution has been a hit ever since.

We were introduced to Daryl's business from our friends at A&J King whose masterful bagels and cookies will make their way into your shares this week. (Andy may be an undiagnosed hot sauce fanatic).

On our first call Daryl told me the history of the sauce, the first restaurant and how he continued his cooking career as a Chef for the Department of Youth Services. (The grit, heart and resiliency of local business folks never ceases to amaze.)

He spoke enthusiastically about the Sweet N' Tangy sauce and gave a near exhaustive list of foods and recipes it could be used in.  From chicken to fish, tacos and salads, the list (if I recall) only excluded a bowl of Cheerios and your evening gin martini - though I am sure a credible case could be made for both.

This sauce is locally made with a lot of love, we are proud to have it in your shares this week and we hope it spices up your Labor Day plates.

RECIPES

Sea Bass with Tomatoes:  This dish deserves to be eaten outside on a summer night.

Mushroom Leek Fritatta: This calls for 12 eggs but thats a whole lotta frittata so I make mine with 6 and use a smaller pan.

Charred Swiss Chard: This calls for sriracha but you know, I'll think we'll tag in Chef Daryl's Sauce. YUM!
