Indigenous People's Day

Monday is Indigenous People’s Day. To highlight this, we will be doing a couple of things this week. First, a land acknowledgement of the land on which we operate and the land from where the food was sourced or prepared.

Family Dinner operates on the ancestral, traditional, and contemporary lands of the Massachusett and Pawtucket peoples. Additionally, the food which will be in the shares this week was either grown or prepared on the ancestral, traditional, and contemporary lands of the Abenaki, Massachusett, Mohican, Narragansett, Nipmuc, Pawtucket, Pennacook, Pokanoket, Wabanaki, and Wôpanâak (Wampanoag) peoples. We acknowledge and honor with gratitude the land, waterways, and people who have stewarded this land throughout the generations. If you would like to know more about the land you are on, check out native-land.ca.

In addition to acknowledging the land, Family Dinner will be donating to the Wôpanâak Language Reclamation Project and Indigenous New Hampshire. With indigenous communities protecting 70% of the world's biodiversity, it is crucial to also protect the languages that are in communion with those ecosystems.

This week in both our Gluten Free Grain of the Week and Grain of the Week will be receiving cornmeal from Tuckaway Farm, a three-generation diversified organic family farm in Lee, NH committed to regenerative agricultural practices that build healthy soil, habitat, and community. Corn is a staple crop of the indigenous communities throughout Turtle Island and central to their history, creation mythology, and culture. It has also been stolen, commodified, and had most of its cultural essence, connection to land, and flavor taken from it. However, there is a growing community of indigenous groups and farmers trying to revive seed stock and bring back true native varieties. I was so excited to connect with Sarah from Tuckaway and nerd out on seed saving, corn varieties, and hear of her work of building a larger grain shed in New Hampshire and goals being part of the community reviving indigenous corn. If you are interested in learning more about the land, community, food, and so much more, check out Indigenous New Hampshire which is full of resources!

RECIPES

(from Shannon)

Stuffed Pita - Here are some inspirations for things you can fill your pitas with! It's a great way to use up extra items in the back of your fridge OR just smack some 88 Acres Chocolate Seed Butter on it and call it a day. I cannot believe how fluffy these pitas are!

Broiled Feta with Caramelized Pears - If you don't use your feta on your pita and are hankering for a little salty sweet, I recommend this! I just need to stop drooling now...

Broccoli Greens - Don't be intimidated by hardy greens! Chop them small for texture in salads, wrap them up like grape leaves, and so much more! This article has a few suggestions of ways to use them that I am excited to try out for myself!

Carrot Top Pesto - Add some green yumminess to your pita dishes with carrot top pesto! Two-for-one veg!

Mediterranean Stuffed Swordfish - Save some of that feta and spinach for this wonderful dish!

German Apple Cake - These chilly nights have been making me want to curl up with a warm piece of apple cake! Or maybe Ina's apple tart is more up your alley? To each their own.

Sauteed Radishes and Spinach - A delicious side ready in 15 minutes, you could pair it with baked haddock or any other protein in your freezer!

Skillet Cornbread - And after all that talk of cornmeal, obviously, I am thinking about cornbread! Or Grits or porridge... This is a mid grind corn meal that is versatile!
