A family symphony

The perfect vacation daiquiri from Uncle Dan. Local berries, fresh squeezed limes. This is a national treasure whose secrets should be Pentagon protected.

A Family Symphony

We got to spend a few days this week with cherished family members, tucked into an idyllic pocket of Maine, snuggling the ocean on a craggy shore.

There wasn't anything of note on the agenda and we contented ourselves playing with babies, chasing old dogs and doing the delicate, intentional work of weaving familial bonds just a bit tighter.

We don't all get to see each other en masse frequently so there was an effervescence in the air as we arrived, even Frank the Dog knew something special was afoot.

Spending time with family can be a bit like settling into a seat at the symphony. There's curiosity and anticipation, knowing that something delightful is about to come your way. There's also an initial clumsiness (always gracefully brief) as if you had forgotten how to participate in such things.

In the concert hall each musician arrives at their place in their own time, warming up to their own tempo. You hear bits of cello mingle with fragments of flute. More join; a violin sings and the cymbals thunder as the waves of sound billow and expand. In the house, conversations bubble up from the living room, the kitchen, the porch. A buzzing cacophony of topics, inquiry and explanation. The static of activity is sharp, sometimes frenetic.

The conductor strides on stage demanding coherence and gathering. The instruments collectively hush at her arrival. There's a moment of anticipatory silence (almost painful) before harmony envelops the scene.

With family, at least mine, dinner time is the chef d'orchestre, the great unifying force. To prepare, we find ourselves in our universes of activities; culling strawberries for Uncle Dan's perfect daiquiris. Aunt Kate blends the perfect vinaigrette. The rest of us searing rib-eyes, slicing baguettes, counting and recounting table settings, washing a pile of dishes upon piles of dishes - a near Sisyphean task.

And in a moment, it all comes together. All that messy, disjointed activity arrives at the table in the form of the butteriest potatoes from Mom, a perfect salad from the garden, sliced steak with scape butter and a collection of people who can't believe they're that lucky to share this moment together.

And you tell stories of those who couldn't be there. Those, like my old man, whose laugh would have been our orchestra's tuba, big-bellied and the loudest. We tell stories so they too have a seat at the table. So their voice is a part of the music we make.

And we eat up every moment, like every crumb of cake, knowing we don't have them forever, grateful to hold them while we can.
