STAY OFF MY GRASS

Before you read that in some crotchety old man voice hollering at the neighborhood kids to stay off his lawn, I'm not talking about that kind of grass. (or THAT kind either, Joe.)

Rest assured I care not at all about my own lawn, that thing is more neglected than Medicare and Medicaid in the current administration and its Big, Beautiful Bill.

The grass to which I refer is, of course, asparagus which is rolling into all your shares this week. Otherwise known as "Hadley Grass" this is the Regina Suprema of summer vegetables in this old man's humble opinion. This perfect, odorific pee inducing vegetable got its moniker from Hadley, Massachusetts which is the Asparagus Capital of the World. But of course you knew that already.

Once the ends are snapped off by hand (to find their natural breaking point) asparagus in this house gets gently peeled and then slowly simmered to perfection in more butter than one reasonable person should consume. The result is the most tender grass imaginable.

If you ain't got time for that, because you can't piddle your days away peeling delicate veggies, may I suggest a savory tarte? Martha Stewart has an amazing recipe for an asparagus gruyère tart that I like to trot out every year around this time. It's simply perfect. And if it's good enough for Martha Stewart and, by the transitive property, for Snoop Dogg, it's good enough for you.

We're excited: we're getting a major freezer upgrade and, of course, we just got a gigantic meat delivery. Great timing. Recipes

As mentioned above, we're in store for a newer, bigger, faster freezer so we're focusing on seafood and veg recipes this week since all the other proteins will be a bit of a mixed bag.

Hake and Rhubarb Ceviche With Salted Almonds - This sounds delicious. And after watching this YouTube video last night, I've got a serious craving. Bonus points for rhubarb in a savory dish.

Grilled Asparagus - Erin's horse in this race (every race?) is clear: BUTTER. I like mine charred with a kiss of smoke. Grill those sprigs! And if you're feeling like snapping off the bottoms is a bit wasteful, you can use a vegetable peeler to remove the more fiberous bits (though it's still won't be as tender).

Grilled Chicory and Asparagus Salad - And I might use that grilled asparagus thusly and sub the escarole with the frilly endive as they're essentially the same thing.

Garlic Baby Bok Choy Stir Fry - A meal unto itself but feel free to supplement with beef, pork or, for a fun weekend project, turn into dumplings.
