Good morning friends,

Halloween is here which means that this newsletter should be full of pumpkin puns and the salutation should have been something like "hey gals and ghouls"... but I just can't bring myself to do it.

I'll admit there is tremendous joy in watching the kids go positively apeshit while eating Cheerios in their Spiderman and Pikachu costumes. And I know that tonight millions of American kids will come wander the streets aimlessly, hopped up on corn syrup and howling "SIXSEVEN" at the moon like rabid wolves. That too brings a joy that should be felt and held.

But at the same time 42 million Americans stand to lose their SNAP benefits tomorrow November 1st. 42 Million people woke up this morning unsure if there will be enough food this week. Reminder: we are the wealthiest country in the world.

Access to food is a basic, fundamental human right. Taking care of the most vulnerable among us is not a pawn in political pissing contests. So while the government decides whether children and the elderly should have the audacity to have food in the fridge - the problem marches on and the need becomes more urgent and more pressing.

Back to JOY! There is Joy to be found in your Instagram feeds and your schools and community centers. So many organizations and small businesses are stepping up to heed the call and help our communities. We are proud to be one of them and do our very small part.

Here's the plan:

This week Family Dinner and its members will donate over $3,000 in local meat and produce to local food banks like la Colaborativa in Chelsea.
If you want to chip in you can either donate to them directly via that link or donate via the Family Dinner page.
If you are a Family Dinner customer (hi! we love you!) you can also donate any of your upcoming shares in your account section.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST:

We will be running a dry goods food drive. If you want to leave items out, over the next two weeks drivers will collect them and we will deliver directly to smaller food banks in need. And as much as everyone might love that tub of dill pickle flavored frosting you are itching to find a home for, here are the items that would be greatly appreciated:

- cooking oil

- peanut butter

- canned tuna

- sugar

- flour

- shelf stable milk

- infant formula

Honey Mustard Sheet Pan Chicken with Brussels Sprouts - WE'VE GOT BRUSSELS SPROUTS! Yup. It's funny that pop culture, at least the one I came up in, maligned Brussels sprouts. Every opportunity they/we had. Was downright mean. But it was all slander! They're delicious. But you all know that. Anyway, this recipe looks pretty damn good.

The Easiest Crispy Pan-Seared Fish Recipe - Serious Eats nails this. It's just an amazing recipe that you can use for just about any fish. And cod is probably my top choice for this sorta thing.

Dumpling Soup - Gotta say. This is not my favorite recipe but it gets the point across: you can use dumplings (or whatever other dough-pocket-stuffed-with-tastiness you have on hand) in soup! I'm ignoring that this says to use spinach and will, of course, be using bok choy.
