Just a few little notes:

1. Our friends at Arc'Teryx are hosting an Earth Day Sustainability Summit at their Lynnfield Marketplace location on Sunday April 21st from 9:30 -11:00. Your pals from Family Dinner (me!) will be presenting alongside sustainability experts from the Appalachian Mountain Club and Arc'Teryx. There will be coffee and snacky items (chomp, chomp) - so RSVP here and come on down. I would love to see you.

2. Calling all bags! One of the ways that we remain a low waste company is by packing in reusable bags that we take back, clean and sanitize each week. Got a mountain of bags? Please leave them for your driver - we love to have them back!

Spring

Springtime means many things to many people. Later sunsets, longer runs, the enduring aches of yard work. For us the warming atmosphere has us craving cocktails on the porch. And rather than dumping tequila into a plastic cup like the frat boys we truly are at heart, we wanted to up our game a bit.

In comes Urban Pharm Shrubs and Curio Spice to the rescue. Whether you're cocktailing or mocktailing it, this Batman and Robin duo have you covered.

Urban Pharm Shrubs are versatile and like to try new things. Start by adding a shrub splash to sparkling or still water. Add a sprig of rosemary to add some texture. Play around with your favorite vodka or gin and rim the glass with a bit of Curio's magic salt. The world is your oyster/cocktail.

Urban Pharm Shrubs was started by pals Jill and Anne who have a passion for nourishing friendships and families around healthy food and drink. They started Urban Shrubs in the pandemic, lovingly hand delivering their homemade magic in wooden boxes. A little sign of love in a very dark time.

And maybe you're scratching your head and asking yourself; what the heck is a shrub? Is Family Dinner in the tiny, tiny tree business now?

A shrub (also known as drinking vinegar) is a concentrate made of plants, sweetener, and vinegar. Shrubs have been around for a long time, and have always been about getting creative with what you’ve got in the service of bumping up deliciousness (and preserving fruit). At Urban Pharm, they use the best and as close to the source ingredients—raw honey, fruit, botanicals, and raw apple cider vinegar from Maine’s oldest operating organic apple orchard—to create shrubs that are unexpected, refreshing, bright, beautiful, healthy, and happy-making.

In the store today we have a few varieties of shrubs to choose from; for your drinks, your daily vinegar shot or to freshen up your salads. (Joe's got his eye on the Watermelon, Mint, and Himalayan Salt to pair with some good mezcal.) Pair them with the Magic Salt or Elderflower Sangria Spice from Curio - or just get spicy all on your own. WATERMELON SHRUB & SANGRIA MOCKTAIL

A recipe from Curio Spice Co. and Urban Pharm.
Recipe for 1 mocktail; makes enough syrup for about 8 mocktails.

A summery cocktail that’s made with Urban Pharm’s Watermelon Mint with Himalayan Salt

Shrub and simple syrup infused with Curio’s Summer Sangria Spice. The syrup has a floral, honeyed, and citrusy flavor, is a terrific addition to your drinks repertoire — use it in cocktails, iced tea, or lemonade. Try it drizzled on fruit or desserts. The Magic Salt rim is, well, magical!

For the sangria simple syrup:

1 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons Elderflower Sangria Spice

For the rim:

3 tablespoons

For the Mocktail;

1.5 ounce Watermelon Mint with Himalayan Salt Shrub
1.5 ounce Summer Sangria simple syrup
4-5 ounces seltzer or soda water
Fresh mint sprig, for garnish

Make the syrup Put the sugar and spices into a heavy saucepan set over medium-high heat.
Add 1/2 cup water and bring to a boil, stirring gently to dissolve the sugar. Boil for 1 minute,
then remove the pan from the heat, and set aside for 20 minutes. Strain the syrup through
a fine mesh sieve into a container. Discard the spices. Store the syrup in the fridge.
Make the mocktail Put the Magic Salt into a shallow bowl or saucer. Rub the rim of a tall
glass with a damp towel, then dip the rim into the Magic Salt. Put about 1/4 cup of ice into
a mixing glass and add the vermouth, shrub, sangria syrup, and seltzer. Stir for 20 seconds.

Garnish and serve.
