Bavarian Pretzels, Blueberry Muffins, and Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies… oh my!!!! This week’s share is full of so many goodies to get you through the last of the snow on the ground and over to daylight savings. I personally cannot wait to turn the clocks forward and start experiencing sunsets past 5:30 because I. have. had. it. With that being said it is still pretty chilly out — you know the old saying about our good buddy March, in like a lion and out like a lamb — so we wanted to get you settled with the essentials to make some hearty dishes.

We have celeriac, also known as celery root, from Clark Farm, some frozen corn from Headwater Food Hub, and Yukon Gold potatoes from Next Barn Over. Those goodies alongside the ground beef being sent out in most shares can be used to make a tasty Cottage Pie — Saint Patty’s Day is approaching, right?

Fun Fact: did you know that traditional shepherd’s pie is made with lamb? That’s why this recipe is considered cottage pie because it uses beef instead — the more you know! Cottage pie came first in the late 1700s when potatoes became readily available to working class families in the UK. This hearty dish was created as a way to stretch the use of leftover roast. It was first mentioned by name in Reverend James Woodford’s Diary of a Country Parson on August 29, 1791 when he wrote, “dinner today, Cottage Pye and Rost beef.” Then, in the 1800s “Shepherd’s Pie” was popularized in regions of the UK where sheep farming was more common. The first mention of the dish was a recipe written in 1849 in The Practice of Cookery and Pastry. Today the two dishes are typically used interchangeably but I could never help but throw a little history lesson in. If you feel like adding a little flair to your cottage pie, or just getting some more veggies in you could always boil the celery root (like you would potatoes!) and add it in with your mash. Once cooked the celeriac has a slightly sweet, but earthy taste that really compliments that of a potato. Try it out and see if you like it! I would also recommend adding the frozen corn to the beef mixture but it’s your kitchen and your rules! That’s what makes cooking fun.

In addition, most folks will be receiving goodies from our friends over at Harvest Maine. Harvest Maine was started in 2022 by friends Matt Chappell, owner of Gather Restaurant in Yarmouth, ME and butcher Ben Slayon of Farmer’s Gate butcher shop. With a mission to use the blemished, seemingly ‘imperfect’ foods that aren’t pretty enough to sell or be used in restaurants, The duo looked to target the good food that was “getting lost in the system” and turning them into great snacks. Misshapen, unwanted, and discarded veggies became their first target leading to three upcycled tahini-based spreads — Broccomole, Celery Root & Red Pepper, and Beet & Carrot. Those colorful, appetizing dips will be sent out in this week’s shares for folks to try. If you like these goodies check out Pummies, their fruit bites launched in 2024 made from the pomace leftover from cider pressings! We love companies that are invested in lowering food waste and supporting hardworking farmers.
