Good morning friends!

To all of you missing the horror show that is my dad joke repertoire, I'm back.

Jokes aside, we have some very serious meats for you this week. We have bison hot dogs from Yankee Farmers Market owned by Keira Farmer, pictured.

We have known Keira for years and FUN FACT have known her Ops Manager Ginger Snow for even longer. Ginger was a super star on the Boston Militia, the Boston Women's Professional tackle football team. I got to play with Ginger for a few years and witness the magic. While I was technically on the team I might as well have been the water boy compared to her.

Back to the bison!

Why bison? From Keira's website:

"Buffalo meat, besides having a rich, natural flavor, is also far lower in fat than beef and poultry. Buffalo meat makes a wonderful addition to a low-fat diet and is an exciting course for a summer barbecue or an elaborate holiday dinner.

At Yankee Farmer's Market, all of our buffalo are fed a natural diet of hay as well as having many prime acres to graze freely. They also get occasional treats such as apples."

(Apples, you say? I wish those were my "treats" and not the metric tons of cheese and bread I consume.)

Keira, Ginger and the team are amazing. They are mission driven and say this about their work:

"Our hope in developing Yankee Farmer's Market is to put agriculture back into the hands of the small, local farmer. We are not interested in mass producing our animals, biologically engineering our animals, or leaving them in unhealthy, inhumane environments as some of the larger farms do."

Hell yes. LOUDER FOR THE FOLKS OUT BACK.

We work with folks like Keira because she sings to the mission of why we started Family Dinner. Long after Family Dinner closes you can find me, standing on a soap box in a Target parking lot - yelling to the masses about local food, local farmers and why it all really, really matters.

For now, fire up the grill and pull out all the fancy dijon ketchups and mustards. It's hot dog time.

Recipes

Franks and Beans - Okay... if you're not just throwing these amazing bison hot dogs between a hot dog bun and topping as you wish, I'd like to try and talk some sense into you. BUT. New England style franks and beans are the only thing that may knock me off my high horse.

Grilled Salmon - I like the simplicity of this recipe and the punch-up of flavor from the vinegar and mustard. Oiling the grates is a must. Another trick that works for me is to gently place the fish on the grates by hand while very slightly moving the fillet around as it makes contact with the grates. Give it a shot. And don't sweat it too much. It's gonna be delicious no matter what.
