Off the Road Again

Howdy-

Joe here. In addition to GM-ing the heck out of Family Dinner, I've been playing in bands for... geez... 30-odd years? And back on May 19th, my current one, Gozu, hit the road for a few weeks to play a bunch of shows throughout the US. 22 days of driving ~7,500 miles across 24 states. We saw dozens of faces. And we rocked some of them. (Bon Jovi, anyone?)

There's a canyon between the highs and lows of tour. On the one hand, it's a real privilege to be able to do this. We've seen so much of this continent and Europe, have met folks that have become lifelong buds, been awestruck by the kindness and hospitality of strangers and, perhaps most importantly, have had some amazing food.

This time around, amongst many other memorable meals, we treated ourselves to back-to-back days of the best BBQ in TX (ergo the country, ergo the world) at la Barbecue in Austin and Hurtado in Dallas-Forth Worth, had a great home cooked meal with our buds Sam and Michelle at Cosmic Eye Beer in Lincoln, NE, had some killer tacos al pastor at Los Agavez Taqueria, a taco truck in Columbus, OH that's moored at a gas station (generally a good sign for amazing tacos... seriously), and an amazing peking duck spread at B.B.Q. King in my hometown, Chicago.

But tour is hard as hell. You see the wrong side of sunrise too often, your body breaks from too many miles in the van or too many hours sleeping on floors, you meet some truly despicable people and suffer through too many gas station meals.

Which is why you start longing for the comforts of home. For me, that primarily means curling up on the couch with Krista (the Mrs.) and our cats. But it also means serious food cravings. Some are straight fat kid: Samuel's dirty wings or Monte's pizza, the patty melt at The Corner Pub in Kittery or the fried fish sandwich at Fish & Whistle in Biddeford. Others, especially now that Northern New England's spring has sprung, mean some strong yearnings for fresh strawberries, grilled halibut, grilled asparagus, radish + sea salt + butter + crusty bread, anything strawberry rhubarb... The list goes on.

It's great to be back. And I can't wait to do it again.

Asian Style Pork Chops - I understand that to say "asian style" is a little foolishly broad. The flavors, however, are complex and the preparation isn't fussy.

Monkfish a buncha ways - Food and wine has some great ideas for your monk. I like it with capers because capers belong on everything

Recipes (ME + NH)

Father's Day is upon us! Happy, happy to all the dads out there. We've got a lot of goodies for you this week. Including, the FIRST STRAWBERRIES OF THE SEASON. 🤤

Fresh Strawberries - Ingredients: 1 qt. fresh strawberries. Instructions: Jam them into your face.

Wisconsin Beer Brats - Midwest represent! This is the way to do it. In fact, I'd propose that poaching then grilling any sausage is the way to roll. Couple extra notes: 1. I'll throw some caraway, salt and pepper into the poaching liquid. 2. You can poach then grill the sausage and either serve immediately or toss the brats back into the poaching liquid to keep warm until service, just make sure the liquid is not hot enough to do any more cooking.

How To Grill Scallops: The Easiest, Most Flavorful Method - Scallops. Not much more to say. 'Cept this: these lil' dudes are super fresh... I've not been able to control myself and have stolen lil' raw bites. With that in mind, better to undercook than overcook.

Ceviche-Style Scallops - If you don't feel like firing up the grill, this is easy and stupidly good. There's a paywall but there're plenty of other recipes out there for this dish.

Ike's Vietnamese Fish Sauce Wings - If you've ever had the opportunity to have these at Pok Pok in Portland, you know. If not, do this. You're welcome. 👍

Grilled Lemongrass- and Coriander-Marinated Vegan Tofu Banh Mi Recipe - This is amazing.
