Reminder!

Heads up that, as we've done on the past, we'll not be delivering on the Saturday (11/29) or Tuesday (12/2) after Thanksgiving.

It's a big couple of weeks leading up to Thanksgiving and a big couple weeks before the rest of the holidays so we like to take this opportunity to let our teeny, tiny crew get in some rest and relaxation.

Besides... who needs more food in the fridge after filling every last cubic inch with leftovers?

Three Things

Tim and I adopted two kids this summer. Ages 12 and 9. They are whirling dervishes of energy, Legos and crumbs and a general stickiness. We are trying to provide soft landing through the ennui of routine; spelling homework at night, chores, soccer practice, pancakes on Saturdays.

At dinner each night we ask them something they learned for the day, and something that made them smile. It's a habit handed down to me from parents, to whom I would like to abundantly apologize for all the drivel I shared in return. I am learning on the fly that 50% of parenting is feigning interest.

So. NOT THAT YOU HAVE ASKED AT ALL but here are three things that made me smile this week.

1. Spying on Butterflies - every year, Monarch butterflies make their migration south from our chilly environs down to Mexico or Central America. The trip can take months but very little is known about their patterns. Until now. This week the New York Times shared an article about butterfly trackers. A 60 milligram solar powered radio tag that has been attached to over 400 butterflies to track them in real time. And yes! There is an app to follow them - Project Monarch Science (Apple, Google).

From the Times:

"Most monarchs weigh 500 to 600 milligrams, so each tag-bearing migrator making the transcontinental journey is, by weight, equivalent to a half-raisin carrying three uncooked grains of rice."

These little flying beauties have been in steep decline over the past decades. The ability to understand them more leads to the ability to keep them off the brink of extinction. It made my heart swell as I sat in soul crushing traffic on 95S to hear that someone, somewhere, many someones spent their time, intellect and passion to tend to and protect something so fragile and beautiful.

2. Logophiles unite! Maybe not all of you guys grew up reading the dictionary alone. Maybe you grew up playing on the varsity soccer team and having "friends". If so, please skip this part.

YOU GUYS! Miriam Webster is releasing the first hardcover copy of the collegiate dictionary in 22 years! It weighs 5 pounds and includes over 5,000 new words including dad bob and .... farm to table! That inclusion makes this entry just mildly less nerdy and slightly more relevant to this newsletter.

Thank you Miriam Webster. I have ordered two copies.

3. Also it's Lark Cookie week in your shares. Amazing, local woman owned business. Share 'em, don't share 'em we won't tell.

The world is noisy and unfair and complicated. At least we have butterflies, dictionaries and cookies.

Easy Pollock en Papillote - "Easy" and "en papillote" are kind of redundant. If you're not familiar, or, understandably, intimidated by the French, it's a nearly foolproof way to get fish to your table that is very tasty. And with all the cooking/eating ahead of us, this seems like a wonderful change of pace.
