Breathe in...

Just a quick note

I'll keep this brief (unlikely). There are a lot of folks out there, maybe you're one, who are desperately tired, sad and overwhelmed in this moment. At Family Dinner we have a company full of bright, loving wonderful people who are reasonably frightened and bubbling with worry. Queer and trans folks, women, folks of color and people who generally give a damn about the fate of the world. Again, maybe that sleepy worried soul is you.

We wish there were an easier way to tend to each other. We would work our arm muscles to the bone if we could hug all our friends (and all of you!) on demand, make everyone some turkey chili and throw a football around in the November air just to release some energy. If only it were that easy.

Maybe we can find simpler, more approachable ways to tend to each other. I've been asking folks what they're eating and if they have gone out to get some sun on their eyeballs today (very medicinal). I love the responses. Gary has been indulging in plain donuts dunked once in milk and then in coffee. Shelby made a cheeseburger soup that apparently took eons but was worth it. I have had not one but two pineapple pizzas (again, we can fight about its merits as a topping). Sally went for pasta salad and Joe for French Fries dipped in mayo. No one really responded about the exercise. That's cool, too.

Little bits of love have always, and will continue, to go a long way. We hope you find some. Maybe the double whammy of corn bread and chocolate croissants as treats from A&J King this week will be some of those bits of love.

Recipes

Pork Chops With Jammy-Mustard Glaze - I've been waiting to do pork chops in shares for a few weeks now because I so wanted to include this recipe. NYT Cooking paywall but it's so damn easy and tasty, that I feel the need to shorthand it here (serves 4):

mix 2T ea. of some fruity jam (I used Olde Haven Farm's Blueberry Ginger Preserves), 2T whole grain mustard and ~1T of water
pan sear pork chops as you normally would
turn off the heat and stir in the mixture
let rest for 5 min.
remove pork chops from pan and simmer the sauce on medium low for a minute or two, scraping up the fond as you go, till you get the consistency you want
plate and serve
enjoy hero status without breaking a sweat

Grilled Tuna With Basil Pesto - Except sub the basil pesto with arugula pesto. Amazing way to feel summery even though basil is out of season.

Carrot Tartare - There's a place up by me in Portland, Chaval, that does this carrot tartare and it is bonkers good. Surprisingly satisfying in a beef tartare way but completely vegetarian. There's also this, which is even meatier thanks to the addition of beets.
