Aw, nuts!

Aww, nuts.

This week's Treat of the Week is one of my all time favourites. (Yes, I am feeling British, thank you for asking. It's all the Great British Baking Show I have been mainlining.)

Q's Nuts in Somerville has cooked up some of their Autumn Roast Pecans to show up in your shares this week and we can't wait. This roast combines autumnal spices (and no. I did not, and I repeat DID NOT, say "pumpkin spice". Get on out of here with that) with orange peel and brandy. YUM.

Q’s Nuts is a small family-owned and operated artisan nut company started by husband and wife team, Beth and Brian “Q” Quinn. It was founded in 2000 with the simple philosophy that high quality ingredients, a love of good food and a passion for creating in the kitchen would produce some of the best tasting nut roasts around. All of their original recipes are vegan as well as gluten, soy and dairy free. And they use all the good stuff; raw organic cane sugar, organic chocolate, pure spices and natural ﬂavours in all of the roasts.

For these nuts, include them atop a pork or chicken roast, crumble them on salad or just squirrel them away for a mid-week treat.

And speaking of squirrels: a few wee little fun facts to note around this time of year as you see these mischievous rodents running rampant around your yard.

A grey squirrel lives around 5-7 years. These little woodland harlots are non-monogamous and promiscuous with an affinity for Chappell Roan b-sides
They gather and hide thousands of nuts a year to sustain them over the winter season which they hide ritualistically
Some squirrels engage in deception, pretending to do the ritual shaking of the nuts to ensure that inside is neither empty nor rotten before pretending to hide it to fake out any onlooking wannabe thieves - only to take it away and hide it in another location
Unlike many animals, their brain and cognitive capabilities expand over the wintertime and cold months, potentially to help them recover deez hidden nuts
(I can't believe we are still talking about this.)
Despite that increased brain power, they only manage to recover about 25% of their hidden bounty; some of it lost to furry thieves and some acorns are forever forgotten, only to become forests of the future.

All that said, the Q's nuts are not ones you will want to hide, not ones you will want to forget the location. They are a treasure you will want to keep close, in your furry little paws to sustain you through the cold, dark season.

Recipes

Stuffed Acorn Squash - We got squashes! (No... I shall not be linking what we're all thinking. Crap I blew it.) This dish is classic. And I like this recipe as it shows off how versatile this can be.

Yellowfin Tuna Poke - We've been asked a bunch of times about the quality of our tuna and, well, let's just say it's nuts. Super fresh. And this is a great prep to get all that fresh tuna goodness without having to spend 20 years training under Jiro Ono.

Southern Smothered Pork Chops - Ubiquitous. At least where I grew up in the Midwest. I think the lede says it all: "pure comfort food at its finest. Pan-fried, super flavorful pork chops covered beautifully in rich onion gravy!"
