A coupla things for you:

1. If you have a few (or a few dozen!) Family Dinner bags, we would love to have them back. Ice packs too! We clean them each week and reuse to keep being a low waste company. Merci beaucoup mes amis!

2. Looking for something amazing to do this coming week (besides obsessively watch videos of Tim Walz at the Minnesota state fair)? Check out the Sunflower Soiree at Brookford Farm. It's a full week of fun activities; cow parades, sunset yoga and amazing local food. These events are great ways to support your local farmers and give them a lil more business!

Keep it Simple, Silly

We love the simplicity of a perfect ingredient and summer is a wonderful showcase of that.

Corn that can be enjoyed with just a touch of butter, berries you can pop into your mouth like candy and of course, the belle of the ball, the ripest of tomatoes.

With all these ingredients, you don’t have to do a whole lot. Don’t gussy them up too much. A squeeze of lemon here, a sprinkle of salt there and just let them shine. The freshness, the proximity, the lack of chemicals or pesticides help all these ingredients just taste like what they are. Tomatoes that taste like tomatoes. Imagine that. It’s almost nostalgic.

When I was a kid, things were simpler. Yes, we churned our own butter and gave nicknames to the dinosaurs that roamed the Earth, but moreover a sandwich was just a sandwich. A ham and cheese had maybe two slices of each and a smear of mayo. A tuna sandwich only required a few potato chips to be smushed into it.

It’s when the ingredients get a little suspect that you see them hiding under more and more “accoutrements”. All of a sudden a turkey sandwich needs a sriracha aioli, and bourbon smoked candied bacon, and harissa ketchup and caramelized unicorn eyelashes that you lose all that original authenticity, all that great simple taste.

We want to return the sammies of eras past in NEXT week’s shares. We have tomatoes on order from Langwater. Maybe you want to think about adding some bacon and the bread of the week to dive into the best BLT summer has to offer.

Just keep it simple, and let summer shine.

Recipes

Easy Leek and Broccoli Frittata With Gruyère - It's the time of year where we have to find ways to use all this wonderful veg and, at the top of our list, is the frittata. This one, using the lovely leeks from Red Fire and banging broccoli from Iron Ox, is a great combo. Oh... and bacon. FIIINE.

Grilled Swordfish Steaks - I LOVE swordfish. When Jamey at Red's Best said it was a big swordfish week, I got pretty stoked. These have so much meaty flavor that I prefer to keep it super simple. Season with salt, finish with some pepper, decent olive oil and a squeeze of lemon... holy crap.

Homemade Burger King Whopper-Style Cheeseburgers - A little Serious Eats heavy this week! But this is how we do our burgers. Super simple. Amazing char. Personally? I'm a two patties, one slice of American kinda guy.
