Crowning Broccoli King

We have a new item in your shares this week we are just pleased as punch about. Frozen local broccoli may not sound like the belle of the ball but these florets have a beautiful back story.

They come to you through Harvesting Good and were planted and grown at Circle B Farms in Caribou, ME, pictured above.

Harvesting Good is a for-profit public benefit corporation and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Good Shepherd Food Bank of Maine. A bit about the food bank from their site:

“The Food Bank first dabbled in local food more than a decade ago when it created Mainers Feeding Mainers, a local food purchasing program that pays Maine farmers to grow fresh crops to distribute throughout the charitable food network,” stated Kristen Miale, president of Good Shepherd Food Bank of Maine. “The program quickly grew with the Food Bank investing nearly $1 million in more than 80 Maine farms that grew 2.2 million pounds of food just last year alone."

The mission of Harvesting Good is to improve access to nutritious food for all consumers and strengthen regional food systems by creating a mid-scale food processing venture.

To capitalize on this mid-market opportunity, Harvesting Good is launching a revolutionary business model in the form of a completely transparent frozen food processing system that produces affordable, healthy food, supports local farms, and strengthens rural communities.

By offering a frozen product Harvesting Good is extending the selling season for local farmers. It is strengthening the local food ecosystem while bringing something bright and green into your shares as Spring finally starts to peak around the corner.

Recipes (MA)

Broccoli Frittata - I make a frittata every Sunday, and never skimp on the cheese. I'll have one slice for brunch that day and then slice and the store the rest or an easy week day breakfast. Remember, mucho queso.

Broccoli and Tomato Pasta - Not fussy but I would sure settle into a huge bowl of this.

Winter Veggie Curry - There are a hundred versions of this on the internet but the Times is pretty straightforward. Use this warm curry dish to incorporate all your winter veggies ; parsnips, potatoes, squash, celery root. Get it all into that spicy mix.

Recipes (ME + NH)

We're quite pleased to be bringing two new items to folks this week. First up, as mentioned at the top, is the frozen broccoli from Harvesting Good. We've also got some beautiful Claytonia from Dandelion Spring. This green is similar to purslane. Bright and crispy, it's great quickly sautéed, in salads or as a garnish on just about anything.

Pork Chops with Purslane Claytonia - Classic Mexican dish with a punchy salsa verde. And here's a great meatless version which would be delicious with the mixed mushrooms from Fruit of the Forest that most of you will be receiving or, for those with vegetarian shares, crumble up some of that Tootie's Tempeh.

Charred Broccoli With Breadcrumbs & Pecorino - Charred broccoli is one of my favorites. And because we really push the charring, we lovingly call it burnt broccoli in this household. This recipe takes cues from the myriad pasta dishes with broccoli and makes a great side...

Baked Fish with Herbed Breadcrumbs and Broccoli - ...as seen here. Classic New England.

Korean Ground Beef Stir Fry - Quick and easy week night meal with tons of flavor. Make enough for leftovers.

Jamaican Fish Soup With Sweet Potato, Coconut Milk, and Pumpkin Puree - Man... this sounds amazing. Not the most well written recipe so check this one out as a reference/alternative.
