Nothing Better

I am not sure there is anything better than a warm loaf of bread. Sure, financial security, a stable democracy, functioning knee joints ...yada yada. But a warm loaf of bread manages to reach into your soul and hug the parts of you you didn't know needed a squeeze.

Andy and Jackie from A&J King deliver to Family Dinner every two weeks or so. We're lucky to get their breads, treats and pastries baked fresh day of. On Saturday mornings their delivery elves come well before the crack of dawn, loading in tray upon tray of buttery, glutenous delights. When our groggy-eyed team arrives at 6, the smell of fresh bread, chocolatey pastries or warm pecan rolls dances about the place like so many sugar plum fairies.

This week they have Anadama bread for all of the shares. Anadama is a bread slightly sweetened with Molasses whose smell and crumb are entirely intoxicating. I plan on personally picking up each loaf, hugging it and thanking it for its delicious service before it goes out the door.

I asked Jackie from A&J what makes theirs special. She wrote: "We use house milled cornmeal in this loaf sourced from Seneca grain and bean in NY. It’s called Wapsie Valley Corn."

As for how to eat it, she continued: "It’s soft with a touch of sweetness from the molasses. My favorite is toasted with butter. But my fave sandwich: smoked turkey, slice of tomato, mayo, and cheddar. "

Jackie, good friend that she is, also told me I was allowed to make a Sir Mix a Lot joke about the bread and entitle this email " My Anadama Don't Want None Unless you got Buns, Hun".

Recipes

Kale and Roasted Root Veg Salad - Okay... kind of a hodgepodge here but we had this a couple days ago and I've been picking it at every time I open the fridge. Kind of like this only Krista is roasting whatever root veg we had on hand on sheet trays (this round was beets, turnips, carrots, onions, delicata squash... I'm sure I'm missing something). And then tossed with this insanely delicious cipollini onion vinaigrette from The Frankies Spuntino Kitchen & Cooking Manual. Slice or pull some chunks of the Anadama bread and toss with some oil or some sort of fat and toast 'em up for the best croutons ever.

Slow Roasted Salmon with Fennel & Citrus - Fennel and citrus are quite a duo. And slow roasting salmon with all that just sounds dreamy.

Chicken Tortilla Soup - Great interactive meal here. Awesome base soup plus an array of accoutrement from which you and those at your table can choose.
