Hello Family Dinner Diners,

Geez... what dreamy weather we're looking at this weekend. Pretty dang perfect for laying around outside with a good book. We've got some recos.

First up, a repost from this time last year of an amazing book Erin got her mitts on:

Written by James Beard Award Winner Mayukh Sen, the book highlights the groundbreaking work of seven women from Chao Yang Buwei - who brought Chinese cuisine the United States- to Najmieh Batmanglij an Iranian living in exile in the US who self published her books after repeatedly being turned away. It's a magnum opus of never taking no for an answer and charting your own course.

It is dynamic, powerful and empowering.

I was hooked like a fish on the line a few pages into the introduction by Sen:

"At its core this book is an attempt to trouble the canon of culinary brilliance, so often homogeneously male. (...) History is often sheepish in assigning authorship to women in any cultural sphere, including food."

It's counterintuitive that being sedentary and prone evokes some serious wanderlust and hunger. (Is that just me?) Regardless, I loved digging through these books by Roads & Kingdoms. Author Matt Goulding, also a James Beard award winner and Bourdain collaborator, is mightily food obsessed and his travels through Japan, Italy and Spain will have you dreaming of the choicest bites in each little region he explores.

Lastly, decidedly not food-related, if you're a music obsessive, you could do a lot worse than Boston music journalist Brett Milano's The Sound of Our Town. He takes us back to the early days of Boston's rock scene and walks us through the eras, not just focusing on the acts that became giants but shining a light on some of my favorite Boston bands, like Mission of Burma and Morphine, as well as on the small clubs and bars that were the breeding grounds of the fertile folk, punk and indie scenes.

Welp... I meant to be lazy with the newsletter today since I'm itching to get outside ASAP but I think I did a proper job. I think I deserve a beer with lunch.

We've got corn!!! Nerd out on the best way to cook here.

Elotes - This is the king of corn dishes. It's a nightmare for folks with a beard (👋) so sometimes the salad form may be preferable.

Grilled Chili Chicken Tacos With Tomatillo Salsa - We've also got tomatillos! I love this time of year. Not nearly as much as I love tacos, though.

Grilled Lemongrass- and Coriander-Marinated Vegan Tofu Tempeh Banh Mi - The original recipe with tofu was so tasty that we've expanded it with tempeh. Would recommend.
