Three Women Fighting the Fight
As it turns out, cancer is no fun. Like zero.
In June I was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer after several months of mystery symptoms and various trips to the ER. I was sick, stubborn and frustrated. Luckily, I had wonderful loving people around me and received some excellent care and support. I had surgery in mid-June and it looks like I get to employ the past tense and say I "had" colon cancer. However, tests found it had taken up residence in one (just one!) of my lymph nodes so the standard is to treat with chemo which I start next week. The next 6 months should be a pure picnic.
I'm trying to keep a light heart about it, though that's a heavy ask. My husband, Tim, has told me I am not, under any circumstances, allowed to walk into the hospital and do a stadium chant "LET'S GET CHEMO" (clap, clap, clapclapclap!) something about it being "rude". Quick PSA - colon cancer is on the rise in people under 50. Talk to your doctor. Get your scans early.
This summer I had really wanted to hike Mount Washington to raise money for causes I care about. That will have to wait a bit (anyone want to join me next year?) But there are a few members in our community who are doing amazing things to support research, education and care in this field. Family Dinner customers, Annie Reece and Niki Cross, are doing the Pan Mass Challenge and the New York City Marathon, respectively. They are wonderful people doing amazing things.
Please read their stories. Both are a bit short on their ambitious fundraising goals. Please support them and these incredible causes if you can. Even $5 or $10 helps inch them to their finish lines. Family Dinner has made donations to each. As have I.
THERE WILL BE COOKIES!!! If you donate to either or both of these campaigns, send a screenshot to hello@sharefamilydinner.com and we will send you some goodies in your next share as our thank you.
Here's a nugget on each of these wonderful women:

Annie
Annie Reece of Topsfield married my good friend from home Evan Reece. Upon doing so (I joke with him) she became my favorite Reece. Evan is now 5th in that line because they have 3 wonderful kids. Lots of Reeces. Annie is a force of a human being, smart, loving, talented and funny. Here is a bit from her about why she rides:
"This year, I ride for my 5 year old cousin, Bea. Bea was diagnosed with an aggressive tumor on her brain in the fall of 2025. We have watched as she and her parents have navigated an incomprehensible diagnosis, while living in hospitals for months on end, undergoing brutal treatments with unthinkable complications. It's been one hell of a rollercoaster that no child or parent should ever have to endure.
I also ride for my mother, Susan Stover, who underwent a stem cell transplant at Dana Farber in December of 2024, and continues her journey with complications and recovery. I ride for my friend, Erin, who was recently diagnosed with colon cancer, and our neighbor and Porter's classmate, Nathan, who is battling Leukemia. And for all of the other friends and family that have, or have yet to encounter a cancer diagnosis and treatment. "

Niki
Niki Cross of Melrose is a badass in all proportions. A former professional soccer player (keep trying to get her to endorse Family Dinner as the official sponsor of retired pro athletes), there is seemingly nothing she can't accomplish. Given that she hates running, this will be her first marathon. However, being the most determined person I know, I can only imagine she will break course records. There is a zero percent chance she gives up, she's running to show what hard work and commitment look like to her daughters and to support the amazing work of the Human Rights Campaign. Here's a bit about why she's lacing up the sneaks:
"Taking on this race has become about more than just crossing a finish line. It’s about resilience, discipline, and showing up every day with purpose — values that sports first taught me and that continue to shape who I am, things I want to highlight and represent to my kids every day.
In this moment, the work of the Human Rights Campaign is even more critically important than ever and will have an enduring impact for decades to come. Their advocacy, education, and fight for equality are helping create a future where everyone can live openly, safely, and authentically. They work heroically and tirelessly on anti-discrimination legislation, voting equity, healthcare access and so much more to support our communities."
Niki also upon learning of the insertion of my chemo port asked if I was allowed to pour bourbon directly INTO it. An excellent question. I'll be calling my oncologist today.
Thank you folks. Have a wonderful weekend,
Erin, Joe and the Family Dinner Fam
